1851 help please .....

Post by pinkshoes » Wed May 03, 2006 11:17 pm

This one is driving me nuts. I'm searching for George Bateman and his wife Lucinda in 1851 census. George was born about 1813 and Lucinda didn't seem to know what age she was, but I guess around the same time. They are in Airdrie in 1841, then Dunipace, Stirlingshire area in 1861 and till they die - I have them in all census years apart from 1851. The children who were around in 1841 and who I know were still around in 1861 were Marion born about 1846 and Elizabeth (sometimes turns up as Bridget) born about 1848. In 1841 there is also Cathrine and John but I don't know if they survived.

I have found them in various records as Bateman, Baitman, and Beatman (I'm certainly the latter :D ) but any combination of wildcards and letters gets me zilch. I've been concentrating on Lucinda as it's less common, but either they went off for a wee holiday (highly unlikely as they had nowt) or the enumerator/transcriber had a field day.

I'd love to find them, as the 1861 has George born in Wales, Lucinda in Ireland - I was hoping maybe to find a county or town for either of them but looks like some hope

Any ideas/clues/flashes of genius/bars of chocolate would be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

Jack
ps, i did notice a Lucinda spelled as Lusinda - but not "yours". :(

:( I'm not having any success either......I spose you did notice that they had a child in Glasgow in 1856 .....

1. LUCINDA BATEMAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 18 MAR 1856 Barony, Lanark, Scotland

....so maybe they were in Barony in 1851 and are in the same black hole as several of my kin

Sorry.....

Best wishes

This may be totally a coincidence.....but......the MS of mother Lucinda on the 1856 birth is WOODS. A search in 1851 for a Lucinda WOODS only turns up one 16 years old in Abbey Renfrew. She's in family that came from Ireland.....all with interesting names. You don't suppose they migth be connected to your Lucinda?.....I think it even says a placename in Ireland but wouldn't swear to what it was...........
What do you think?????

Best wishes

Ok....this is my final wild guess... ...do you spose that this might be the Lucinda BATEMAN born in 1856 in Barony???

Dwelling: Stirling Row
Census Place: Dunipace, Stirling, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203538 GRO Ref Volume 478 EnumDist 1 Page 3
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
Isaac BATEMAN U 27 M Rochvale, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Head
Occ: Iron Miner
Lucy BATEMAN U 24 F Rochvale, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Sister
Occ: Mill Worker
Mary Ann GALLACHER U 23 F Dumfries, Scotland
Rel: Boarder
Occ: Mill Worker
John HENDERSON U 20 M Ireland
Rel: Boarder
Occ: Iron Mines

If so then note that she's got an older brother who was born in the same place as her....Rochvale??? or should that be Rochdale???? I dunno...need a map expert for that!. ...ANYHOW...if Isaac is a son of George and Lucinda then we are whittling closer to where they might have been living in 1851......

Best wishes

Thanks everyone for your time and effort.

Jack - I'm fairly sure they'd not reached Stirlingshire by 1851 anyway, unless it was a fleeting visit before heading back to Lanarkshire.

Jean - yes Isaac and Lucinda 1856 are mine. Isaac married the lodger Mary Ann Gallagher who also led me a merry dance till AndrewP helped me find her as Mary Ann Goricher

So they were in Chapel St Airdrie in 1841, Stirling Street Dunipace in 1861, George died in 1865 of a cut throat but Lucinda carried bravely on and was in Nob Row Dunipace in 1871. She died in 1879 in Stirling Row, Dunipace where Isaac took over as head of the family. I have all the children from abt 1838 to 1856 born in Airdrie area, then Thomas born 1859 in Dunipace, so it looks likely they are lost in Barony with Jean's rellies. Unless they're somewhere completely different for a few years then back to Lanarkshire.

They're quite a sad bunch really, what with George and his cut throat, son Edward killed at 14 yrs in a pit accident (I don't think they got his body out), a few weeks earlier Thomas had died aged 8.

Don't know about Lucinda Woods Jean. May be a realtive but I can't think who or what. Lucinda's death cert gives her parents as John Woods, farm worker, and Catherine McCann.

Thanks for trying - fingers crossed something will turn up eventually.

Best wishes

Hi Pinkshoes

Sorry to say it does look like a dead end on these leads. There are no parents names stated on the DC of Bleakly WOODS (an ill informed grandson being informant) so even if he might have been a brother to your Lucinda it can't be proven. Sad too that Edward died before another census so that his only birthplace is stated as Airdrie, Lanark from the 1861. Because he was 10 years old then you have to consider that the family might just have been in Airdrie and got skipped by the enumerator.

You're right Jean - I guess some things just have to be let be and it's not as if I've no idea where they were in 1851 - everything points to Airdrie area so I'll content myself with that.

Thanks for your help.
