1841 N.H. abbreviation? .....

Post by LesleyB » Sun May 07, 2006 12:01 pm

Hi all
I've posted an image at:
http://talkingscot.com/gallery/displayi ... p?pos=-530

It shows James Reddie & his family and I'm puzzled by the N.H. abbreviation. Known children of this family are:

ISABELLA STEVENSON REDDIE
Female Birth: 15 NOV 1833 Dunfermline
ALEXANDER REDDIE
Male Birth: 19 MAY 1835 Dunfermline
JANET REDDIE
Female Birth: 12 JUL 1838 Dunfermline
JEMIMA REDDIE
Female Birth: 31 MAY 1841 Dunfermline

ROBERT REDDIE
Male Birth: 11 OCT 1844 Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland

So, as it seems to say "week 1" in the female age column I'm thinking this is Jemima, who is not named yet -but does anyone know what N.H. stands for? "Not" something?

best wishes
Lesley

Hello Lesley,

As a guess I would say it says N K (not known) of the 1 week old child in the name column.
How strange though if she's named in the IGI.

Hi Lesley

I agreee with Annette that it looks much more like NK (not known) than NH - the child was only a week old at the census time and they may well have not come up with a name yet. It may be that Jemima was baptised later in June that year and the IGI entry has not been fully updated.

Regards

Ted
Looking for Allan / Gordon / Troup / McInnes / Grant / Taylor / Jackson from Aberdeen (city & shire) & Banffshire
Alexander / Allan / Stewart in W Lothian
Allan / Burnett in USA and Canada / Davidson & Philp in Fife and Lanarkshire

Not if she hadn't yet been baptised. The 1841 census date was 6/7th June and she was born 31st May, so most probably not baptised by the date of the census.

Not all OPR entries show the date of baptism.

And near definitely "NK", not "NH", - for Not Known.

Oh dear
I'd thought of NK - but it just didn't look like a letter K to me! You are probably right...

Best wishes
