1891 Problem ?? .....

This only applies to RDs where there are more than 99 enumeration districts, - which means only a few RDs in Glasgow, Edinburgh, and maybe Dundee, - I haven't checked the latter. Aberdeen I'm unsure about .........

Instead of ED 100 ~ 109 you will find Ref. 0A0 ~ 0A9
Likewise ED 110 ~ 119 becomes 0B0 ~ 0B9
and ED 120 ~ 129 - Ref: 0C0 ~ 0C9

This is most probably due to a glitch whereby the first two digits of the base 10 numbers are being converted to base 16, hexadecimal, numbers, - in that system A = 10, B = 11, C = 12, D = 13, E = 14, and F 15 ....... The field requires three characters, so, just to complicate matters, a leading 0 is stuck in.

In all the case that I've seen so far, there is no linked image.

The problem has been reported to ScotlandPeople, and hopefully there's a quick and simple fix.

There does not appear to be the same problem in 1901. I haven't looked at 1871 or earlier, - I'm not even sure if there are RDs with more than 99 EDs in these earlier censuses.

Can I assume that you've not yet seen any similar problems for 1841 ?....
wait a mo ............... searching on John SMITH in Glasgow City produces 318 hits... on just the first page there are ED numbers, - 227, 235, 232, 148, 124 and 130, all Barony 622, so that I think that it can safely be taken that there isn't a "1891" problem in 1841.

Similarly in Edinburgh with EDs 103 and 169 in "Edinburgh" RD - 685/01, and 215, 220, and 185 in St Cuthberts RD - 685/02.

So even more likely that this is a glitch that applies only to the 1891 data ..........

And unless someone comes up with contrary examples relating to '51, '61, and '71, I'm going to assume for the moment that these censuses also have no similar problems ............
