Glasgow Streets .....

Post by Caroline » Mon May 08, 2006 11:40 am

Can anyone tell me what district Stobcross Street would be under in the 1851 census? Also what distict would Piccadilly Street be under in the 1861 census?

Trying to find my Robert Campbell and his family in both, but need to narrow things down a bit as there are so many Campbells!

Hi Caroline,

I have an ancestor who died in Piccadilly Street in 1870. The district was Anderston. If you look here:

http://www.talkingscot.com/rds/city-rds-glas.htm

it shows Anderston was 644/08 between 1855 aned 1874.

Researching: Easton ( Renfrewshire, Dunbarton and Glasgow), Corr (Londonderry and Glasgow), Carson (Co. Down, Irvine, Ayrshire and Glasgow), Logan (Londonderry and Glasgow)

Hi Caroline,
As Nina rightly says - Anderston.
There are these that might be worth trying.
(Elizabeth in 1861 says born Alloa - would that fit?)
--
1851 - 622 (Barony - Anderston)
Robert CAMPBELL 48
Eliza 45
Catherine 14
David 10
Jessie 4
--
1861 - 644-8 Ed 13 (Anderston)
Robert CAMPBELL 59
Elizabeth 57
Jessie 14

Thanks for that Nina

Yes that's them Jack!

Elizabeth was actually born in Clackmannan, but near enough.

Does it happen to have Davids birthplace? I know the family moved from Leith to Glasgow at some point , but can't trace them in 1841, so knowing where David was born might help.

Thanks,

Caroline

Hi Caroline,
Sorry, no more details - the names are from name indexes, and (sadly :() only the 1861 gives birthplaces.
So i don't know where David is as born in 1851,
but you shd be able to find the original pages easily enough on SP for both years.
(if you have trouble with any images, then just say and i'll get a transcription)
--
In 1851 there are 3 David Campbells age 10 - choose Anderston.
In 1861 there are 2 Jessie Campbells age 14 in Anderston - choose Ed 13 page 9.
--
Then, as you say, knowing where Catherine 14 & David 10 were as born in 1851 it shd narrow down where they were in 1841.
(a quick search didn't have the family in Glasgow)
Jack
ps, the Gros No in 1851 is 622 (580) Ed 20 p 3 - but this will be a bit different from SP's No.
So just select the Anderston entry.

Hi Caroline,
In 1851,
--
Cathrine 14 as born Leith, Edin.
David 10 as born Dundee, Forfar.
--
So looks like one or tother for the family in 1841.
If you've any trouble with the SP image, i can give you a transcription.

Hi Jack,

Thanks for that. I had found Catherines birth in Leith, but there is no record of Davids so handy to know that it was in Dundee. Tried finding the family on FreeCen in 1841 in Angus and Leith, but no luck! Guess they must be somewhere in between.

Will go on SP when I've got a few more things to look up and will get back to you if there's a 'no image' problem.

Hi again Jack,

Just found them under CAMBELL living in Dundee - always worth doing the phonetic search on the surname!

Hi Caroline,
Glad to hear you've found them (as Cambell) in Dundee 1841. :D
I've also seen Campbell as Camble....
