1841 Agnes McNaught or Mckenzie saga of poor relief .....

Post by maggie » Thu May 11, 2006 10:08 pm

Hello
I'm looking for Agnes McNaught in the 1841 census
and can't find any possible ones .Yes she could be Dead
she's most definitly not listed with her husband James or son Arthur
in Bonhill but could be staying with other rely's :?:
I thought i had her & James together in the 1851 in Bonhill but doubts are creeping in that it is them as is the doubt that the 1856 death cert i have found for Agnes McNaught is the one i want
Can anyone help me find Agnes in 1841 please.

update on the poor relief
I have had an email from the local studies library Paisley(thanks to Jack's & Annettes suggestion)Yes there is an application for a Widow McNaught widow of James
who applied in April 1841 but her husband died in March 1841 but the strange thing is the year of marriage is 1797 which is the year i have for the marriage of James McNaught & Agnes McKenzie parents of Arthur, but from what the nice lady who answered my email say's my info on childrens names dosen't match. So unlikely to be who i was looking for .
I have emailed the lady again to ask if i can have a copy of this widow McNaughts application .
kind regards maggie
ps apologies if this all dosen't make sense

Hi Maggie, a check at scotlandspeople.gov.uk shows 1 Agnes McNaught living in Bonhill, Dunbartonshire in 1841. Then 2 Agnes McNaughts in Bonhill in 1851, 1861. (Did your Agnes have a daughter called also called Agnes between 1841 and 1851?)

Also a check on deaths shows only 1 result for an Agnes McNaught (nee McKenzie) unfortunately this was Scotland wide for 1855-1955. Is this the death cert you have?

Perhaps you could find a free census for Bonhill for 1841 or 1851 to see if Agnes McNaught is around?

Sorry not much help!

Hello Maggie,

On the IGI family search site there is a James McNaught and
AGNES FREEBAIRN marriage in 1845 in Bonhill.
Could this be them ?
Maybe she is on the 1841 Census under Freebairn.
Hope this helps.
I am also searching Mcnaught's but have not come across this pair .

Cheers
Maureen

The Agnes Mcnaught in Bonhill in 1841 has age recorded as 25. She is living with James aged 25 and James aged 1. If I am reading your query correctly your Agnes is much older

Hi Melissa, Maureen, and Trish,
Seems i've given you some extra work....
I should've added a "See other post" to this query of Maggie's after i replied to,
"Agnes McNaught" - "Institutions" on 24 May 2006.
There's a strongish possibility that Agnes McNAUGHT was as Jean McNAUGHTON (60) in Glasgow 1841.
(at her daur Jean GARDNER's house)

Just to add more confusion there is an IGI entry for an
Arthur McNaught Marriage in BONHILL January 18 1845 wife Mary Yuille.

If you can find the MC it may help to establish if Agnes was deceased by then.

Hello Melissa Maureen Trish & Jack
thankyou all for your contributions it's appreciated
thanks to Jack i am quite satisfied that on the 1841 her son in law gave the wrong name for her .

TRISH
the Agnes Freebairn /James Mcnaught i haven't linked in i don't think they are mine unless possibly cousins?
But the James with Agnes and the James aged 1 are this Agnes was an Agnes Malcolm.

Maureen

The widow Mcnaughts application i now have a copy of it's not mine but prehaps it could be of some relevance to you ??if you want to see it just say.briefly it says that she lived in Bridge street and it would seem they are from Argyllshire children include Jean,Janet ,Marion,Mary ,elizabeth& james.
Arthur Mcnaught &Mary this marriage is my family.
Thankyou all once again
kind regards maggie
