1861 Census help .....

Post by Rab » Wed May 17, 2006 2:08 pm

Hi all,

I've once again hit a brick wall with the 1861 census. In the process of looking for the Bradbrook family I've used alot more than 30 credits of SP without success- more than I dare count. I've tried all combinations that I can think of and have stopped for now as I am just throwing credits away.

I know where the family should be but unfortunately SP doesn't work that way. They should be residing at Main Street, New Haven, North Leith, Midlothian. This census will hopefully answer alot of questions if I am able to locate the famly.

In 1851 the household looked like this:

12 Main Street, Newhaven, North Leith 1851
  • Richard Bradbrook (Head)- 61yo Grocer born in Martlesham, Suffolk, England.
  • Janet Bradbrook (Wife)- 66yo born in North Berwick.
  • Richard Bradbrook (Son)- 24yo Grocer born in Glasgow.
and in 1871 the household looked like this:

36 Main Street, Newhaven, North Leith 1871
  • Richard Bradbrook (Head)- 80yo Grocer and spirit dealer born in Suffolk, England.
  • Jane Black (Servant)- 45yo Housekeeper born in Kirkliston.
Richard junior died in 1864 and acording to his death entry his mother Janet was deceased. So I know both Richards were alive in 1861 but cannot find either. Janet may or may not have been alive at that time.

To add to the mix in 1857 Janet Swess Bradbrook was born and she was illigitimate. The mother was Hannah Halfyard (the Bradbrooks had an Elizabeth Halfyard living with them in 1841) and the father was Richard Bradbrook, grocer. Which Richard this was I am not sure. I'm hoping that by finding the 1861 census entry that may shed some light there too.

Any help or pointers would be appreciated.

thanks

Rab

Hi Rab

Just so you don't feel lonely....I've tried all my immediate tricks and I don't find your Richards either. I'll probably keep tossing this one around some but my suspicions are they aren't there....or are extremely well disguised. Have you considered viewing the 1861 census film for Leith in case they simply were left out of the indexing but appear in the actual records??

No other suggestions at the moment.......

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean,

thanks for looking. At least I know now that it's not something I'm doing wrong. In times past I've thrown credits looking for something that is staring me straight in the face. I'll keep looking. It could be both Richards were away on Census night.

Thanks

Rab
