Post by thomsos » Sat May 27, 2006 5:19 pm

I am trying to find the Thomson family in the 51/61 census - husband George, wife Mary and son Hugh Thomson age aprox 4, living either Dennistoun or Bridgeton areas

Hi thomsos

Just a few questions to help narrow this up! Do you have them on a later census?? Where were they born?? What are the approx ages for George and Mary? When was Hugh 5 1851 or 1861??? Any idea of an occupation for George??

Thanks
Jean

That's what the problem is, I can't seem to get definite information on them, I have George Thomson and Mary Gibson married 1823 (don't think this is right), Hugh does not seem to be born until 1847, George was a handloom weaver, and Hugh was married to an Agnes Palmer 1890, sorry if its a bit vague

Hi again thomsos

Thanks you gave me just enough clues to get a foot in the door!!

First off.....here is your Hugh on the 1881 census. Pretty sure it's him as he was a widower at his 1890 marriage and I was having an awful time trying to figure out what the heck his occupation was  ....and then I found the same word on the 1881 :D

Dwelling: 13 Mc Ewan St
Census Place: Barony, Lanark, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203634 GRO Ref Volume 644-2 EnumDist 45 Page 3
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
Hugh THOMSON M 34 M Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Head
Occ: Guttapercher Boot Maker
Jeanie THOMSON M 32 F Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Wife
Mary THOMSON U 5 F Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Daur
George THOMSON 3 M Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Son
Robert DAVIDSON W 68 M Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Father In Law
Occ: Woolen Weaver

So with this if you're interested in tracking down his first wife's details you get the bonus of her dad living with them!

Ok...now it gets more seroius.....Haven't proven it but have a real good feeling that your family was in Barony in 1851. Sad thing is I think father George was already dead so no good for getting his parents names. Hugh has a houseful of siblings though and with a bit of luck you can trace the son-in-law informant to Mary's DC to a marriage to one of Hugh's sisters listed on the census. This would help cement the whole package nicely! The pretty convincing piece for me though is the fact that Mary died at Duke Street....and the family I found in 1851 is living on Duke Street.....

Go buy this one and see what you think.........

1851 THOMPSON HUGH M 5 BARONY GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 622/00 144/00 006

Best wishes
Jean

Oh...almost forgot...you'll have to buy the page before too to get the whole household on the 1851 census....

Best wishes

Hi Thomsos,
You should also be able to find the family in 1841 on SP. All children born LKS.
Looks like there could be an older daur Ellen, and seems Robert [7] in 1841 was as Andrew [18] in 1851.

The 1861 above is from an index, thus no more details.
So i don't know if Mary THOMSON & Mary McKEE are the one and same, or it's just some coincidence.
There is this marriage & 2 children from the IGI....

Jack,
This is great, I'll start comparing right away, it certainly looks like tie in. Hugh was the descendant I had, he was a problem too, he was a widower married to an Agnes Palmer who was married 3 times, sometimes I feel like I'm going round in circles, but I'm sure I'll get there
Thanks for helping
Thomsos
