Anderson's .....

Post by thomsos » Sun May 28, 2006 3:56 pm

I am trying to find some details of a William Anderson and Elizabeth Getty. Barony/ Bridgeton area, he was a boilermaker, and I reckoned they were married 1860's, they had a daughter Elizabeth who married George Williamson 1890, Glasgow.
I have been trying to find them on some of the census, but the name is that common, I'm not sure were to start. can anyone help
Thanks

Hi thomsos

The quickest way to isolate a family during this time period (and you know the maiden name and married name of the female  ) is to search for her death using both maiden and married namesl. In your case do a search for the death of Elizabeth GETTY ANDERSON. I even left it wide open for all the dates available and there were only 2......and only 1 fits age wise! So using this piece of info it's much easier to narrow up where they were in a census. Due to the date of her death you'll see it should be quite easy to pick the right family on the 1891 census.

I believe this is your family from the 1881 census disks:

Dwelling: 295 Nuneaton St
Census Place: Barony, Lanark, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203630 GRO Ref Volume 644-1 EnumDist 26 Page 10
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
William ANDERSON M 34 M Kincardine, Kincardine, Scotland
Rel: Head
Occ: Boiler Rivetter
Elizabeth ANDERSON M 36 F Blantyre, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Wife
Elizabeth ANDERSON U 14 F Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Daur
Occ: Cotton Weaver Unemployed
Margaret ANDERSON 13 F Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Daur
Occ: Cotton Factory Piecer
John ANDERSON 10 M Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Son
Occ: Scholar
James ANDERSON 6 M Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Son
Occ: Scholar
Ellen ANDERSON 1 F Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Daur

If their daughter Elizabeth checks out age wise and occupation wise on her marriage then it's certain.

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Thomsos,
For Births or Marriages up to about 1875 it's useful to look for them on the LDS FamilySearch page first.
I usually use the IGI part of it.

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... _form=true

This makes it easier to find the right people on ScotlandsPeople if you want to download any certificates.
Elizabeth appears to be as GATEY on the childrens' BCs too.

WILLIAM ANDERSON
ELIZABETH GATEY
Marriage: 29 DEC 1865 Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

Some children from a parent search in the IGI.
ELIZABETH ANDERSON - Birth: 29 MAY 1866 Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
MARGARET ANDERSON - Birth: 28 JAN 1868 Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
JOHN ANDERSON - Birth: 13 OCT 1870 Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
WILLIAM ANDERSON - Birth: 10 OCT 1873 Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

Jean, I did use IGI on LDS, and found a William and Elizabeth, but the dates were well out, which added to my confussion.
I'm just a beginner, but I'll get it right yet!!
Thanks

Hi thomsos

You'll get there yet! We all started at the beginning once upon a time :D Oh...and btw....we better give Jack the credit for the last IGI tip  as it is very sound advice!!!! Looks like the tricky spelling of GETTY might have been a problem for you.

Best wishes
Jean
