1871 Census - watch out! .....

Post by Jack » Thu Mar 24, 2005 12:37 pm

Hi Folks,

At long last it's here - but watch out!
--
Enter a name - say John Smith
Age - say 30 to 40
Sex - male
untick 1891 & 1901 - you only want 1871
select say Lanarkshire - all districts.
--
Now this is where you should click search (i just did).
BUT your search will be for 1891! For some reason your tick in the 1871 box changes over to 1891....

So please be careful - you need to untick 1891 again, tick 1871, then click search.

1871 census

Post by Alison Plenderleith » Thu Mar 24, 2005 3:00 pm

Hi All,
I tried to do a search for 1871 only. Ticked appropriate box, clicked search and got the Microsoft Internet Explorer box up telling me
' you must choose at least one of the available census indexes to search'.
But I had! I tried ticking another box aswell, then unticking it but it just won't let me search with only 1871 ticked!
Doesn't it realise how long I've been waiting for and looking forward to this day  or have one of you earlier birds than me broken it already

All the best,

Alison

Sporran and I have noticed a good few mistakes for open lower case "U" being transcribed as closed lower case "A". This makes a significant difference on McCurdie, McCurdy, McCurdey searches, many are indexed as McCardy or McCardie.

This isn't too much of a problem with an uncommon name but what about Burns and Barns! Very common names.

It's unfortunate that two of the User Group just happen to be interested in the same name and that this name seems to be a problem for transcribers. Generally my other tests have been fine with a few wee errors here and there.

Anyone looking for the Rathlin Island, Kerr family in Greenock will find them under Ridol. Anyone looking for the John Riddell/Riddle family in Greenock will find them under Middle.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Not too many problems to report here in Belgium, except site going slow.

Branches are a little heavier and the tree has grown taller in one direction , so very happy if a little poorer ... :D

Little sad to find my gggg grandmother Sime indexed as a Lime though. Have sent a contact form .

Time to make a cup of tea and reflect on what I have learnt ..

I have encountered no problems with my searches, however the site is slow, I wonder why !! I found my John and Susan McCracken in Kilmarnock and it listed Susan's father James Muir as living with them, Susan and her father James were born in Ireland, so at least I can now look for his death around Kilmarnock area, that should give me his parents.

Happy Hunting everyone !! :D

No probs with new index so far.Davie I found my granpa's grandfather and now know the name of his Hotel, and a bonus of a son I didn't know about. This lead me to his second marriage which we thought was to an Agnes but we couldn't narrow it down.Surprise it's Annie. So great day for me.
