Kirk Session Minutes .....

Post by HeatherH » Tue Jun 20, 2006 6:59 pm

Hello All,
Found something interesting last night.

Date: 27 April 1810
Name: HOLDEN , Andrew
Trade:
Place:
Topic: admitted being the father of Margaret McKnight's child
Notes:
Archive Ref: CH2/537/11
Page(s): 63

Would there be much more mentioned in the actual minutes or would it just be what I have here.

I believe that Margaret may actually be Mary...

Date: 25 July 1811
Name: HALDANE , Andrew
Trade:
Place:
Topic: irregularly married to Mary McKnight
Notes: irregular marriage
Archive Ref: CH2/537/11
Page(s): 107

All the info I have on this couple to date has her as Mary McNaught (McKnight or McNaughten)

Happy Hunting,
HeatherK

Hi HeatherK,

Go for it! If they are anything like the Kirk Session Record a distant cousin shared with me...they are absolutely fantastic reading...pages and pages! I constantly go back to re-read them. I got a glimpse into my ancestors lives from the late 1700's. Unfortunately, it didn't give any information to get us back another generation, but what it did give is invaluable.

Regards,
AnneH

Hi Heather
If you contact NAS they may be able to send you photocopies of the relevant pages for a reasonable charge. ...But maybe you'd rather save up for the trip!

However, just found out it is not held at NAS, but has been digitised so pages should still be able to be sent to you:
  • CH2/537 Dumfries, St Michael's Kirk Session 1712-1880
    RefNo CH2/537/11
    Repository Dumfries and Galloway Archives
    Title Minutes
    Date 1808-1820
    AccessStatus Not held
AccessConditions This record is not in the NAS. It is held in Dumfries & Galloway Archives. This record has been digitally imaged, however, and the digital images may be seen in the NAS Search Rooms on the 'Virtual Volumes' system.
Copies A microfilm is available for public consultation in the National Archives of Scotland at General Register House on the reels referenced MFilP/CH2/537/8 and MFilP/CH2/537/11.

Best wishes
Lesley

Thank you Davie,
From the 1841 census I had...

1841 census
Andrew Holden abt 1786 Dumfriesshire, Scotland Dumfries Dumfriesshire 821
Mary McKnight abt 1786 Scotland Dumfries Dumfriesshire 821
Margaret Holden abt 1829 Dumfriesshire, Scotland Dumfries Dumfriesshire 821
William Holden abt 1831 Dumfriesshire, Scotland Dumfries Dumfriesshire 821

I found these 3 on LDS...

JEAN HOLDON
Christening: 16 JUL 1813 Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland
Parents:
Father: ANDREW HOLDON
Mother: MARY MCKNIGHT

Margaret Holdon
Christening: 30 SEP 1818 Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland
Parents:
Father: ANDREW HOLDEN
Mother: MARY MCKNIGHT

MARY HOLDANE
Christening: 21 DEC 1826 Troqueer, Kirkcudbright, Scotland
Parents:
Father: ANDREW HOLDANE
Mother: MARY MACNAUGHT

William was a new one for me and now I will have to look into Robert.
As for Andrew I have him as being born 1 Oct Dumfries, Dumfrieshire which fits with his death 30 May 1867 in Hawick,Roxburghshire. He is a apprentice Blacksmith in Rox with a family called Brown on the 1841 census. So now I will have to look and see if the Andrew born in Dumfries is my 3 great grandfather or the Andrew born in Troqueer.
I still have no sign of his son Robert Henry Haldane(Holdon etc.) born abt 1843 in Dumfries.(2nd Great grandfather)Have him on the 1871 census to the 1901 census ,as well as Marriage and death certs)I tried looking while in Dumfries but no joy.Still I have a few more possible leads on this family now.
