Lost a Cameron .....

Post by janemar » Sun Jun 25, 2006 7:54 pm

Angus Cameron was born but not registered in Minginish, Diurinish (Skye) about 1825 and married Rachel Morrison at Vatten House, Diurinish 1855. As far as I can make out they had 3 children, Donald (my husband's grandfather), Marion and Janet. The family ended up in Greenock, census returns 1881/1891, but by this time Rachel is widowed, and from an 1871 census appears to be living with her brother Alex Morrison along with the children- death presumed? Amngus seems to have disappeared from view between 1860 and 1871. I have hunted for details of his death, but nothing seems to have been recorded- or I can't find it. Tried all the usual places, but not outwith Scotland. Has anyone any bright ideas? Queried if he went missing at sea- though can't see why he would. How are deaths recorded in this instance? I would welcome some tips on this one- he has really got me stumped. Maria

Hi Maria
Have you found them on the 1861 census? Are they together then with expected children? Do you know what Angus's occupation was?

These are the children you mentioned - all submissions on IGI
1. MARION CAMERON
Gender: Female Birth: 08 JAN 1858 Duirinish, Inverness, Scotland

2. JANET CAMERON
Gender: Female Birth: 11 MAY 1860 Duirinish, Inverness, Scotland

3. DONALD CAMERON
Gender: Male Birth: 13 JAN 1856 Duirinish, Inverness, Scotland

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi, Lesley
Angus is noted on the 1861 census at his parents' house in Gillen with Donald (aged 6) and Meron (or Marion) aged 4. His father Evander is a crofter. 1855 at his marriage noted as labourer, presume agricultural.

Hi, Lesley- you have them all. But I am beginning to wonder what happened to Janet. She too seems to have gone missing. Not on the 1871 nor 1881 census. She might be worth trying to follow up. Any other thoughts would be most welcome. Thanks for your help Lesley

Hi cousin Maria :D

A search on the 1861 census for Rachel turns up a likely looking 27 year old ( The telling fact is how you'll find the enumerators entry on her surname) who is with a family as a wet nurse. No sign of Janet. Makes me think that wee Janet might not have survived. :(

Best wishes

Hi Jean
I think you might be right, but too tired to follow her up tonight. As you can see taking a break from my side of the family. I am sure I will find out about Angus one of these days. Rachel was indeed a wet nurse- to young Henrietta Mac Leod. Silly me- I didn;t make the connection. You can get lost in this stuff. Anyway good to hear from you.

Thank you, Lesley. Thank you Jean. No further on Angus but a very fruitful discussion with you both. Just realised another small piece of a puzzle resolved. Hope your beach party is a sucess! Will be en route to Ireland via Peebles then. Who suggested Vimto- can yoy still get that stuff? Sugarally water is what you want you want.

There will be photos aplenty, Jean. My camera is fully loaded and ready to go. Definitely looking forward to the trip.
