MY WEBSTERS – LOST IN FIFE (or Angus … or …? .....

Post by Mykayla's Gran » Sun Jul 09, 2006 12:53 pm

Hi everyone! I wonder if someone could give me some help or advice with my Webster family, just in case my thinking is now so muddled that I’m missing the obvious :?. I keep going over the same ground and getting nowhere, and I’m at the stage where I really want to move on but can’t stop puzzling over what happened to them ](*,).

It seems that life was one struggle after another for this family and although I’ve managed to get a lot of information on some of them I’m completely stuck on others, mainly the girls for the usual reasons. I’m trying to discover what happened to these poor wee orphans in adulthood, if they lived that long, and because of various problems that keep cropping up, such as the listing of male as female, misspelling of names, incorrect ages, not forgetting the naming system in Scotland and the number of Websters in Ceres/Fife, it has been very difficult. (Although earlier than I’m researching at present, the 1861 census for the family have four James Websters in the same household. On the 1851 census there are three, but the youngest of those, a 2-year old, is listed as a son-in-law :-s.

So … if anyone can help with this family I would be eternally grateful! Thanks for having a look anyway, whether or not you have any suggestions.

Hi Vee,

This could be Elizabeth on the 1881 census and it looks like Mary is living with her.

Hi Vee
A wee trip to Cupar Library and you could see these this birth on Microfilm (if you've not already):

Isabella b. 29 Dec 1854 Ceres – No Image - No more info

They have the census films there too for Fife, but so do LDS in Dundee.
Best wishes
Lesley

Hello Caroline. Many thanks for your help in tracking down my elusive Websters :D . Thanks to you I can now move forward again. I should have known it would be a misspelling that was at the root of my lack of success. I’ve had so many of them it’s becoming the norm  . I don’t know why I didn’t think of using a wildcard this time. I did do for James’ birth, in all combinations I could think of, and I’ve searched Statutory Records and OPR in vain. It has to be there somewhere on SP though so I’ll keep at it. I really do like to have the proof in print.

Strangely enough, when I saw the Williamsons’ address at 24 North Street at the 1881 census it rang a very loud bell. I dug out all my papers on the family and found Jane, another sister and also my direct ancestor, on the 1881 census, and guess what her address was – 24 North Street :o The sisters must have lived in the same block of flats. (It’s heartwarming to know they had stuck together in spite of their poor start in life.) I’d been given a copy of the 1881 census details for Jane by a distant relative who had done a wee bit of research some years ago but it couldn’t have come from ScotlandsPeople as it only had three people on it, and as I knew they were mine I didn’t download it myself. I wish I had now. The details given to me are as follows:

William Craig - Head - Hotel Waiter - Marr - Age 26 - Born Alyth

Jane Craig - Wife - Reeler - Marr - Age 21 - Born Cupar

Elizabeth Williamson - Boarder - Reeler - Unmarr - Age 16 - Born Dundee

I suppose the above Elizabeth was a relation of Alexander Williamson in the other flat, but then again, I should know better than to suppose anything. I’ve lost count of the number of downloaded records I’ve supposed wrong! I will download this record though. I want to pass all this information on one day so I want it to be complete.

Thanks lots Caroline. You’ve given me the will to get back into it :D

Best wishes.

Vee

Hi Lesley, and many thanks for your expert advice and tips. I haven’t yet visited LDS but I will. They seem to have a mine of information for family researchers. I visited Cupar Library some time ago when I was searching for some other material, but work and other commitments don’t allow a lot of time for a visit during Library opening hours. Maybe my next holiday … and I also want to go to Edinburgh, and to Kew, and loads of other places which hopefully will further my research. One day … !

Thanks again Lesley!

Best wishes.

Hi Vee
LDS Dundee is worth a visit. I've certainly found the fact that they have the census films for the whole of Scotland very useful - they are open two evenings during the week if that is any help:

Bingham Terrace
Dundee, Tayside, Scotland
Phone: 01382-451247
Hours: T-Th 9am-3pm; W, Th 6pm-9pm.
Closed: Closed from 24 July; reopening 8 August 2006.

Best wishes

Hi Lesley :) . I went to the Dundee LDS Family Research Centre this week to see if I could further my research and it was well worth it. I met a small band of obviously dedicated people who were very friendly and helpful and gave me a few pointers to help in my research. I found a few elusives with their help. My husband came along too, which was great as he is much more switched on technically than I am. He’s been doing his tree on and off for several years and was back to the 17th century with his father’s line in Wiltshire but he got stuck and let it slide a bit. However, our visit to LDS sparked his interest and he’s off again. He progressed his line a bit further too so we were both happy and have booked again for next week \:D/.

For information to anyone interested, the Centre will be closed over the Dundee holiday later this month as you already mentioned, but it’s also closing for 6 months for refurbishment sometime soon. I’m not sure when but I will enquire next week.

Thanks again Lesley!

Kind Regards :) .

Hi Vee
Thats great - thanks for getting back to us & telling us about your visit. They are a dedicated bunch in there & I very much admire them in that they are very helpful to all-comers, not just the members of their own Church.

As you probably know, you can order films from further afield there as well - I had some OPRs from Deptford, Kent at one point, so even the Wiltshire lines should be posssible to research after a short wait for any relevant films to come in.

Now you are hooked, the six month closure will be a blow!

Best wishes

Just an update regards the planned refurbishment of the LDS Family Research Centre in Dundee – it has apparently been postponed due to the high costs involved.

While I understand that the custodians of all of this information must be disappointed by the delay, I can’t say I’m too sad at the moment. Having just discovered the wealth of information it contains, six months is a very long time …

Kind regards.
