1851-can anyone help? .....

Post by joette » Thu Jul 13, 2006 3:41 pm

I am going bankrupt with the amount of money I am spending trying to find my Greers on the 1851 Census.
In 1841 you have from Freecen: SCT1841/559 Place: Abbey (Paisley)-Renfrewshire Enumeration District: 4
Civil Parish: Abbey (Paisley) Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 4 Page: 4
Address: Welkins

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
GREER Mary F 40 Ireland
GREER John M 11 Renfrewshire
GREER Catherine F 9 Renfrewshire
GREER Thomas M 7 Renfrewshire
GREER William M 5 Renfrewshire
GREER Robert M 3 Renfrewshire
No Father-Gilbert Greer-a stonemason aged about 40.He died in 1856(in Scotland) just before the marriage of young William to Euphemia Page.
I can find no trace of any of the family on the 1851.I have tried soundex, wildcards using every permutation of Greer that I can think of.Looked at at least 20 of each name-including a sneaky one where their names/birthplaces were ditto of the previous page.
I am wondering where Gilbert came from thinking of Ireland & would love to know where they were in 1851.Knowing my luck they are in Ireland.
Robert married Catherine Jenkins in 1867 & became my GGGrandparents.
:? I am also puzzled as there is no Gilbert in the family which is a name which was handed down from at least the generation before& there are lots of Gilbert Greers cousins,2nd cousins coming from Old Kilpatrick where Robert & William settled.
Just answered one of my questions  found a Gilbert-must have been born after the 1841 Census. He marries Annie Adams in 1870 & they are living in Lochwinnoch for the 1871 Census. Can find no death for either & not in any of the further Censuses.!!

Hi Joette

Was born and brought up in Lochwinnoch, so if you need some local info, please let me know. My mum, sister and family still live there.

Wow thanks for that Jack wonder why I cannot find them on SP??
Why the heck does this couple never live together? She outlived him & he died in 1856.
Luss makes sense as they ended up in Old Kilpatrick which is fairly near.
As they were all stonemasons maybe working together???
Off to give SP another look. Thanks so much.
Well have had another look & still being told they are not there. So have sent off a snitty e-mail to SP obviously an indexing problem!!!
If you hadn't helped would just have assumed they were in Ireland or not enumerated. Now just if I could find Mary & daughters....
