Hullo and a warm welcome to Talking Scot.
Since I had never heard of an Aberdare in Scotland, I went looking on MutiMap. The only Aberdare that came up was in Wales! Could the name on the Census be Aberdour, which is in Fife. Perhaps you could upload the Census to the TS Gallery, for help with reading the name of your ancestors birthplace.
Best wishes

Hi Brian,
Did a search on SP and there was a Thomas H W Nelson born in 1896 in Aberdeen and a Mary J Watson born there in 1895 - so looks like it's definitely Aberdeen !

The only problem here is that the mother is shown as Head of Household, and a Widow ................ except that if you have a look at http://www.talkingscot.com/gallery/disp ... =72&pos=22JustJean wrote:Hello Brian
If you visit Scotlands People website and buy a few credits you can access the 1891 Scottish census for yourself. You'll find it quite easy to locate your family enumerated as NELSON in Aberdeen. Actually if you search for a 3 year old Alice there should only be one.
Best wishes
Jean
you will see that she was indeed a widow, or at least describing herself as a widow in 1891.
Today's competition is to decipher the words in the "Parents" column

PS Note that I rarely post images of register images, preferring to direct folk to where they can be found, but this one is a classic, with, I'm sure, a tale to tell, not least given the name Thomas Hendry WOOD or NELSON
