Cross Matching .....

Post by Pandabean » Sun Jul 23, 2006 8:23 pm

Is it possible to try and cross match family members while searching the census (1861)?
eg searching for Bob A and he has a son called John A will their GROS numbers be the same or similar?

Hi Andy

In a word..yes! You can opr for example run a broad search on a surname and use no first name and pick up all males and females and then look for same members of the household before choosing to spend 5 credits to view one. Depending on the surname but sometimes the quantity of results can be surprisingly small. On McDonald though.....I don't recommend it! !

Best wishes
Jean

I have found one relating to McDonald in the 1861 Census.

Janet (b.1859) aged 2 - GROS-644/09 066/09 001
James (b. 1851) aged 10 GROS - 644/09 066/09 001

Both are in Tradeston (which I cannot find on the map) Janet was born in Milton.

I however cannot find Alexander (aged 5ish) or James (the father)

Hi again Andy

My reference to this not working with the surname McDonald was only in reference to the sheer volume of pages of results that could be expected. From your search yes it appears these two individuals were from the same household....but you have no way of knowing the rest of the family without purchasing a veiw of one of them. If you were expecting to find the other members you listed as part of the same family then it's possible this isn't the right one....or perhaps they were not in the house on census night and therefore got enumerated in another household. Tradeston is a district in Glasgow.

Best wishes
Jean

I have used that method several times when searching the censuses. Sometimes I need a pen and paper to write them down before using another forename.

I have also used it in the births section when I suspect twins.

Hi Andy and Jean,
That family appear to be -
--
1861 census 644-9 Ed 66 p 1 (Tradeston)
Malcolm McDONALD, 45, b Glasgow, LKS
Mary 43, b Port Glasgow, RFW
Donald 16, b Glasgow, LKS
Peter 12, b do
James 11, b do
Robert 6, b do
Janet 2, b do
--
There are some Alexander McDONALDs aged abt 5yrs with a father James.
Who should all be in the family? Plus ages? Birthplaces?
Jack
--
ps, there are over 4,500 McDonalds in Glasgow 1861....
And that's only for that exact spelling...!
--
pps, Andy, is the Alexander aged abt 5yrs the one that was the son of James McDONALD & Mary REID?
Later; i think it is - please see your other post in Statutory Records.

A wee tip on quickish Cross referencing.

Cut and paste the results of the first search into Notepad or another (not too advanced) word processor.

Then cut and paste the second set of results under the first lot.

You can now cut and paste the GROS numbers into the "Search" or "Find" to check for any matches.

I tend to omit the last string of numbers so that the search can pick up folk who may "Over the Page".
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Tradeston is in the city centre just south of the river Clyde, across from the Broomielaw. Today it's a bit abandoned and has some light industrial business on it. Although some new flats are being built (at great cost!). The old Renfrew Ferry was moored there until recently, but was moved back across the river a few weeks ago.
