1881 census mistranscription? .....

Post by ninatoo » Mon Jul 24, 2006 3:55 am

Hi all,

I recently found some Crombie relatives in the 1881 census, in Dundonald Ayr. The head Thomas is 34 but listed as Thomas Cromb. Some of the family group are Cromb, some are Crombie. That isn't the problem however.

In his family group, there is an Essie J, female aged 9, born Ireland. I wonder if this is an error, and believe it or not I am wondering if it should be Samuel, aged about that age. He isn't on the census anywhere at SP but he should be! Unless his parents left him in Ireland when they immigrated between 1878-1879. Samuel is with them in 1891 aged 20.

Can someone please have a look at the disks?

Hi Nina,

I had a look on the discs for you but I'm afraid there is no Samuel with the family.

Dwelling: 15 Fullarton St (West Side)

I also checked the neighbours and didn't find any Samuel Crombe (ie) or Cromb. I then checked on the first name only for any Samuel born in Ireland...the only Samuel living down the street at 27 Fullarton St (Westside) is 10 year old Samuel Roy...wrong last name!

I expect you have these births from IGI:
ESSIE JANE <CROMIE> - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 19 NOV 1871 , , Ireland
MARGARET CROMIE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 17 APR 1873 , , Ireland
JOHN CROMIE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 07 DEC 1877 , Down, Ireland
JAMES CROMIE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 14 AUG 1875 , Down, Ireland

...again, no Samuel. Maybe someone else will have better luck.

Regards,
Anne H

Hi Nina,

As ever with these matters, the final answer is to see the original for the 1881 census. I presume that you have viewed the 1891 image on Scotlands People. Until such time as 1881 images are issued, you need to see (or have someone see on your behalf) the microfilm to confirm who is there, if there are any doubts regarding the transcription.

All the best,

Thanks for the replies...I don't know why I forgot to answer.

Yes Russell, I was hoping someone could look at the original...forgot the disks are just transcriptions aren't they?

Thanks Anne for the IGI births. I had all but Essie, as she didn't come up with a search for Co. Down. I will be broader in future.

So it looks like there wasn't a mistake with her name at least, but I wonder where Samuel was? He doesn't seem to be anywhere in Scotland! He seems to have been born about 1870 according to later censuses.
