1851 Census British Colonies .....

Post by jaycee » Wed Aug 02, 2006 2:31 pm

1851 census show my gt g g grandfather, his sons, and one daughter-in-law as born in British Colonies. I haven't come across British Colonies in any other census. Help, where do I go from here?

Back to one of those globes in Victorian times where half the world appeared in red :!:

Seriously, all that I can think of for the moment is later censuses, to see if just a wee bit more specific info is provided.

You could try the www.1837online.com site. For Birth, Marriage and Death entries for Overseas., just click on the "Overseas" link. It is a pay-to-view site.

I have just managed to find some of the family in 1861 census with place born, Ireland. Also the gt g etc grandfather's death certificate in 1855 stating place of birth as County Down, Ireland. Perhaps they were making some sort of political statement in 1851 census :!:
