Ah but that's why so many turned to religion-the rebellion of the young & a rejection of their parent's lifestyle! I wonder who/what the strange women were!

I can imagine Joette & I can't wait to see the rest of the document to see just what they all say, one son's representative apparently wrote & disowned him.....I'm intrigued to know which one it was because one of his son's was a bigamist!
Thanks Catriona for the link, I've just read it and I can remember my mum saying only the other day that, now I could be wrong but I'm sure she said, Yoker Parish Church Choir went to the Models in Moncur Street and Abercromby Street to do shows...she was under 10 at the time. Reading that description of the place, no wondered she was petrified singing solo!
It's very sad and quite unimaginable reading.
Cheerio for now

Here's the wee snippet from Barbara's application-Jockbird wrote:Hi Joette,
Unfortunately it would appear that my Gx2 grandfather was not one of the more worthy causes in the Model Lodging House.
Annette sent me a wee snippet which she'd going to post on here later but his application runs to some 7 pages and this is just one wee bit from his wife's application:-
"He ill uses her, is much given to drink and goes with strange women." [-X
I'm now in contact with the Mitchell to try and get the actual copy of this but I've found my first black sheep and I can't imagine it going down well with his Bible Woman daughter.

Husband came to the applicant 3 weeks ago to be friendly with her and stay but she would not have anything to do with him. He ill uses her, is much given to drink and goes with strange women.
On Tuesday last he went to her house and entered it by the kitchen window while she was standing at the washing house door. She then went in and asked him to leave. He refused to go, went to sleep for two hours, she went for the police. Before leaving he smashed a chair and water colour painting.
Kind regards,
Annette M

I see this post was created a few years ago. I hope I'm not too late.
Hello, it has been interesting to learn about George's history in this post. Thanks for sharing the information you've discovered. I'm also related to George Gray Millar and Barbara Black.
George Millar is a witness at Peter Black's wedding. Peter is Barbara Black's elder brother. On the 4th March 1870 Peter Black married Louisa Maxwell in Glasgow. Their marriage certificate is held within the divorce papers.
