The Donald McKellar from the 1881 census seems to have married Sophia Farman in 1886 in Greenock. This too would help to narrow down your McKellar/Gillespies.

Hi again, I nipped up to the Watt Library VERY briefly after work. The McKellers/Gillespie mob will take a while to sort out in the various censuses.

There is a slight possibility that Alexander McKellar abandoned his family and that Jane took up with Joseph Gillespie for security.

From 1832 until 1843ish there are entries in the Trade Directories for two Captain Alexander McKellars one lived in Drumfrochar Road and died age 89 in 1843 the other was around the Vennel then West Stewart Street.

The Greenock Advertiser has this: "Alexander McKellar, formerly of Greenock, died on the ship 'Shooting Star', bound for New Zealand, on 11th July 1859."

The Telegraph has the following: "Janet McDougall McKellar died 24 East Shaw Street on the 3rd Dec 1884 age 71".

At 24 East Shaw Street in 1881: (Coincidence?)

And

Donald McKellar, brother of Alex, 114 McLean Street, Glasgow, died at Smithstone on the 3rd Jan 1896 age 50.

I'll try to get a better picture on Saturday but these families need alot of sorting.

Regarding the mother, Mary 67 in the 1881. She is clearly listed as Mary Jane in prior censuses. 67, turns 68 after the census dies, in December 1884 age 71!!!!!!?????
