Disappointed or what? .....

Post by emanday » Mon Sep 11, 2006 2:28 pm

Found my Bonners on 1891 Census - So why the disappointment, says you?

Well the first thing I noticed with glee was the the top 3 people on the sheet, (not my Bonners), showed the area in Ireland they were born, i.e. Londonderry and Belfast.

Great, says I tae masel! Now I'll know where mine came from in Ireland.

Wrong again  Both my adults were born in Ireland, but the enumerator only wrote in Ireland - no placename. Assuming the sheet was transcribed from a form the family filled in, I am not happy with my ancestor's reticence

Back to square one

It's soooo frustrating when that happens & one of the main reasons I have not ventured over to the Irish side of my tree. They to a man& woman give Ireland as their birthplace even the one who was not too sure if she was born their or in Scotland!

Maybe aye, maybe no.

Just because it's just "Ireland" in one census, doesn't mean that there won't be additional info in other censuses.

Secondly, any chance of poor relief applications?, as these very often include details of birthplace down to the townland level.

I had no idea I had so many Irish rellies until the 1841 Census revealed around 20.
To a man/woman they died before the next census or always stuck with Ireland as birthplace& the one with the ambigious birthplace Ireland/Scotland was the info on the Poor Relief Application of one Mary Ann Brown nee Gault a poor wee soul & my six times great-granny but she did rear ten children so she did well. Her Father Benjamin Gault & her sister give Ireland as their birthplace in the 1841 Census for Muirkirk.
Torrance,Simpson are the others

As happened with one of mine - on the 1881 census, the only census to have actual place and not just Ireland like all the others.
Scotland - Donaldson / Moggach / Shaw / Geddes / Sim / Gray / Mackie / Richards / Joel / Coull / Mckimmie / Panton / McGregor
Ireland and Scotland - Casey / McDade / Phillips / McCandle / Dinely / Comaskey + various spellings

I've also got the 1881 and 1901 censuses for this family, and that was no easier that finding this 1891 one. In the course of at least 8 kids between 1881 census and the 1901 census they changed address at least four times and lost at least one child.

In 1881 he was stated as married, but the first Scottish born child wasn't till 1886 and they are the only ones listed on the censuses (minus wee John by 1901 who died of whooping cough under 2 years old).

Where would I find out where poor relief records, if any, could be?

If they lived in the Glasgow & surrounding areas then it's the Mitchell for a wee look in their Archives.
Hope it gives you a result.
