How do I find what district a street is in? .....

Post by ChrisGlackin » Thu Sep 14, 2006 4:30 pm

Hi guys! I am new to this so here goes.

I have an address for a "Micheal Duffy" who I know lived in "36 Moir Street, off London Street, Glasgow" in 1910. I am using the ScotlandsPeople web site, as you know you have to buy credits so I am trying to cut down on the amount of hits. My problem is I do not know what District this address is in. Can anyone advise?

Cheers
Chris.

Hi Chris,

Welcome to TalkingScot.

Blackfriars was only a registration district fron 1875 to 1906. Can someone who knows their way round Glasgow (not me) suggest what district Moir Street is likely to have been in after 1906? The list of Glasgow registration districts can be found at:

All the best,

AndrewP

Blackfriars became 601 after 1906.

Added later: my list of OPR Registers says the above , but 601 seems to be in Ayr. Right after the "601" there is a 624, but that is Blantyre. Now I've confused myself

Hi folks,
Does this help any?

The Registers of Blackfriars 644-5 (1875 to 1906) were deposited with the Registrar of,
Dennistoun 644-4 (1907 to 1934) then to,
Townhead 644-6 from 1935.

Hi Mary,

These RD numbers are confusing. The following are for 601 and 624 as I believe them to be.

601 was Kirkoswald, Ayrshire from 1694 to 1854 for OPRs and from 1855 to 1968 for statutory registrations.

624 was Blantyre, Lanrkshire from 1677 to 1854 for OPRs and from 1855 to 1971 for statutory registrations.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi again folks,
Just wondering if Moir Street came under Calton in 1910?
Calton 644-4 (1875 to 1906)
Calton 644-3 (1907 to 1934)
Moir St (runs north/south between the Gallowgate & the London Rd) can be seen in 1913 at -

Hi Andrew, Yes that is what I found, but the entry reads, (and I used a ruler to make sure I wasn't jumping lines :D )

Blackfriars, County or Burgh - Glasgow, First Year - 1875, Last Year - 1906, Today's RD - 601 followed by a blank space and with no heading 624.

Of course I'm confused. I printed these things off GROS.

So I asks mesel; If they are saying things that aren't so, why did I bother?

Hi Mary,
You're not alone in being confused with the RDs - happens to me quite (make that very) often!
The GROS Nos for all Glasgow at the present day go from 601 to 624.
I think they start each new year at 601, and when that book is full go onto 602, and so on till the end of the year.
(maybe they don't always reach book 624?)
Not too sure when this started though.

I would like to thank you all for so many replies. Being a "newie" all these numbers that are getting quoted is a bit confusing but I am sure I will get used to it. I found the info I was looking for thanks, it was all very helpfull.

Cheers
Chris. :D
