I have a couple of chaps, one is my Gx2 grandfather, the other his brother, both are seamen and I'm trying to track them in 1881.
I've got the 1881 census for my gx2Granny and husband is not on it. His details, as per the 1861 census which was his first Scottish census are:-
William John Hardie or Hardy born circa 1847 in Ireland. In 1861 he was living in Quay Street, Saltcoats with his mother Helen, father David, sister Mary and wee brothers David and Joseph.
His brother David is still living with mum in 1871 and is described as a sailor. unfortunately the emunerator still hasn't put that nugget of information of where in Ireland he's from.
Now if both chaps were on boats on census night, would they have been counted?
I'm just looking for that breakthrough that gives me a wee bit of info as to where in Ireland they have come over from. Unfortunately I'd blown a load of credits on SP looking for them and then came up with the bright idea that wee brother Joseph who was born in Stevenston may have a place of parents marriage on his BC....but I'd still like to track my chaps down in 1881, especially as William drowned in the Clyde in a shipping incident in 1889.
Thanks for your time.
Donna
