GG Gran missing on 1851 census, please help !!! .....

Post by robertson26 » Sat Sep 23, 2006 11:43 am

Hello there :D

Can anyone tell me if the 1851 census for Perthshire is complete ?

My GG Gran was Jane Sutherland born March 1837, Auchterarder, Perthshire. She has an older sister Elizabeth Sutherland born Nov 1834, Auchterarder. Their mother was Mary Gardiner born about 1805, Auchterarder.

I can find the family on the 1841 census at Auchterarder.

Jane married William McKelvie in 1857, Auchterarder, and she then moved to Muthill followed by Glasgow.

I have Jane on the 1861 census at Muthill and the 1871/81/91 and 1901 census in Glasgow.

Its only the 1851 census where i can find no trace of her.

I really want to find the family on the 1851 census and would sincerely appreciate any help/advice.

Thankyou, Debbie

Ther's a 15 year old Janet Sutherland in Tibbermore in Perth on 1851 census. Maybe she was visiting relatives or the family were living there at that time.

Might be worth a look?

The only other thing I can suggest is the use of wildcards. David got me using these to great effect. As he'd tell you, if an informant was illiterate and especially if they had a strong accent, the registrar wrote down what he heard.

One of my families has, to date, seven or eight different spellings, and I know other people on here have even seen the same surname spelt differently for principal, parent or informant, etc... on the same entry!

Though I have only had this once, I suppose it could also figure - a typo by a transcriber. My Sloan was indexed as Slonn, even though the actual certificate was very clear.

Hi Debbie

The age would be off but the rest of the info could fit.....there is a 12 year old Jane Sutherland as a servant born Auchterarder in Blackford in 1851

1851 SUTHERLAND JANE F 12 BLACKFORD /PERTH

Can't find a clue for mom Mary Gard*ner nor sister Elizabeth in 1851 though. I wonder if her mom might have married between 1841 and 1851...or perhaps she died??? But Jane's MC does not state her mother as deceased nor does it give a different surname for her....hmmmmmm. Also hmmmm on her dad being a shoemaker named Robert. Is that him with a full family and other wife in 1851 in Auchterarder or is that just a coincidence on name, location, and occupation?

Not sure this helps but I tried!

Best wishes
Jean

WOW Jean

You really did your homework!!!

Yes that is Jane's father on the 1851 census with wife Catherine and family, tut! tut! swine.

He left Mary when she was heavy pregnant with Jane.

Jane was born in March 1837, Robert and Catherine's oldest child was born in Dec 1837.

I have a copy of the Kirk Session minutes from 1838 where Mary was interrrogated as to who the father of her 2 children where, and Robert Sutherland confessed to being their father.

Mary Gardiner died in 1881, Glasgow.

The entry in Blackford is very interesting but if thats my Jane then where is mum and sister ??? :x

I can find absolutely no trace of Elizabeth Sutherland after 1857 and this is the mystery which is really getting to me. I have searched head to toe in Scotland for a death certificate for her with no luck.

Thankyou so much to you and Mary for your help.
