HEARTON - No census entries pre 1871 .....

Post by alimail » Tue Sep 26, 2006 9:32 pm

Hello there
I am tracing the Hearton family for a friend, most of whom lived in the Girvan / Ayr area. There are 14 listed on the 1871 Census, most of whom were born in Ayr, but none at all on the 1861, 1851 or 1841 Censuses, apart from one Mary.
Some of my own line (Reid, Miller) only appear on later Censuses because they emigrated from Ireland mid 19th century, but the Heartons all seem to be "true" Scots, yet they are not listed. I've looked at Herton and Harton as variations, but none seem to fit.
I'm particularly interested in Agnes Hearton, listed in 1871 as a washerwoman with 2 illegitimate sons, the brazen hussy!! I'm trying to link her with the other Heartons of Girvan, but can't get the connection without information from the earlier censuses. I can't even find ANY reference, birth, death etc, with that surname previous to 1871.
Can anyone help?????
Ali

Many thanks to Mary and Andrew for their replies. The Hortons are not related, Mary, though I never thought of trying that particular variation of the name.
Andrew, you've found my washerwoman single parent, Agnes, though she spells her name with the added "e" in all other listings.
I haven't used the IGL with any success, and wondered if you might give a poor novice some advice on the best way to get info from it. I can never open any documents....but I am a bit of a computer moron, from a long line of illiterate poor folk with skeletons rattling all over the place....but that's another story!!!!
Again, thanks for the replies.

Hi Alison,

The Mary Johnston (9) apparently living with the McInally family in 1861 is possibly the same Mary Johnston who was living with Agnes (Washerwoman) in 1881 and listed as her daughter (although she was born in Dec 1854 and would have been only 6 in 1861) . If it is the same person then that would certainly seem to link Agnes with Mary Hartin/Hearton/Harten, wife of John McInally.

Isobel

Hi Alison,

I used a combination of the online IGI and Hugh Wallis's website.

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... _form=true
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com ... /index.htm

On the Hugh Wallis site, follow the links Scotland and Ayrshire to find Girvan. There you find the batch numbers that I used in the IGI search.

Then I searched for Last Name HEARTON in each of the C... and M... batches, then Father's last name HEARTON in all of these batches and finally mother's last name HEARTON in all of these batches. To perform these searches, input only the last name (in one of these last name boxes at a time), the region "British Isles" and the batch number. Leave all of the other boxes empty.

Then add together all of the results, throwing out any duplicates, and you should come up with the same list as I did. The online IGI is very tolerant of spelling variations, so all the diferent spellings came up in the results.

All thebest,

AndrewP

Hearton

Hi Alison,

Agnes is in the 1841 Girvan census as Agness Harton. She is living in Bridge Street in the Household of Thomas Robertson 35 , Hand Loom Weaver. Also listed are Sarah Robertson 35, William Robertson 5 Jane Robertson 2 John Harton 8.

Agnes Hearton, Washerwoman died in Girvan 19th Oct 1901 aged 72. She was single and parents were given as Samuel Hearton and Sarah Hearton m/s Chalmers. Agnes Harton daughter of Samuel and Sarah was born in Girvan on 8th March 1828.

The Sarah Robertson in the above census would appear to be Sarah Harton/Chalmers. Presumably Samuel was deceased by this time. William Robertson(aged 5 above) married Alice Williamson in Girvan in 1856. His parents are given as Thomas Robertson and Sarah Chalmers (so they don't appear to have been married to one another).

Sarah Harton or Chalmers died 7th Feb 1867 in Girvan aged 71. She is described as Widow of Samuel Harton, Cotton Weaver. Her parents were Robert Chalmers Cotton Weaver dec'd and Helen Chalmers nee Ross. The informant was her daughter ,Mary Harton.

John Harton ( age 8 above) appears to have married Agnes Shaw. They had a son Samuel Harton and a daughter Sarah Chalmers Harton born Calton Glasgow in the 1860's.

Mary McInelly/Herton died 11th November 1894 at 86 King Street Govan. She was the widow of John McInelly Shipyard labourer and was aged 66. Father Samuel Hertin, Mother Sarah Robertson previously Hertin nee Chalmers. Informant was her daughter Margaret McInelly.

Isobel

Hi Ali,
My name is Carl Hearton. I have been researching the Hearton line for some time now, on and off, and have some information that may be of interest to you. I can trace my direct line back to Samuel Hearton and Sarah Chalmers, my GGGGGrandparents. Many years ago my grandfather b1904 told me that his Father(A P Hearton) and his Grandfather (Robert Hearton Married to Jane Weir, Girvan 1873) used to holiday in Ireland and that is where the Heartons came from. In fact my Great Grandfather still took holidays in Ireland up until his death in the 1950's. I have recently found out, following the death of a Great Uncle ,that my Great Grandfather took his holidays in Enniskillen. Following this I have since established that County Cavan is the home of the Harten, Hartin, Hartan, Harton, (Hearton?) surname. I believe that prior to Samuel, around 1800, that is from whence we came. Could be wrong, but it fits with what was passed down from my Grandfather and must be worth a look.

I hope this is of some interest to you.
Carl Alexander Hearton
