Census .....

Post by Alice Bradford » Tue Oct 03, 2006 3:26 am

In the 1841 census I found my ancestors Margrett, and Henry Hamilton living with Joseph, Joseph, Jane, Margrett and Euphemia Hamilton. I would like to know if my ancestors are related to these other Hamiltons. I thought perhaps Joseph could be an uncle to Henry. I looked at the 1851 census and they are not living together. Euphemia age 22 and Margt Hamilton age 11 are living together and Joseph Hamilton age 45 and Joseph Hamilton age 13 are living together. Does anyone have any idea as to how I can find out if these people are related?
Thanks,
Alice

Hi Alice
Having found some of the other Hamiltons in the 1851 census, you could try finding births for them on the IGI maybe? You should have ages and places of birth from the 1851 and relationships between the Hamiltons who are living together to work from...

Best wishes
Lesley

I think I looked at the IGI, but maybe I didn't. I will check and try.
Thanks so much,
Alice

Dear Alice,

The 1841 census to which your refer contains entries as follows:-
Fentons Close,Dundee

Joseph Hamilton M 35 Plasterer born outside census county
Margrett Hamilton F 35 born outside census county
Euphema Hamilton F 15 Angus
Henry Hamilton M 10 Angus
Jane Hamilton F 12 Angus
Joseph Hamilton M 5 Angus
Margrett Hamilton F 2 Angus

My gut feeling when I looked at this was that this was a husband and wife plus their children, so I have tried to show this is the case by tracking them through later records.

By 1851 the family has fragmented. Joseph Hamilton, Plasterer, age 45, widower, born Kirkliston, is living as a lodger in Tay St Lane Dundee. Son Joseph is living with him, age 13, Factory Worker, born Leith, Edinburgh. Euphemia Hamilton, 22, Millworker , born Dundee and Margaret Hamilton,11, Millworker born Dundee, are living as lodgers at Blackscroft, Dundee.

Joseph Hamilton(jnr) married Elizabeth (otherwise known as Hepzibah) Orr in December 1857.He is described as the son of Joseph Hamilton, Plasterer and Margaret Hamilton m/s Bishop and was 21.

Euphemia Hamilton died in Dundee Poorhouse in March 1881 aged 59.She was a pauper, formerly Factory Worker and her parents were Joseph Hamilton, Plasterer Journeyman (dec’d) and Margaret Hamilton m/s Bishop (dec’d). The informant was her brother Joseph Hamilton of 14 Lawrence Street, Dundee.

In the 1881 census Joseph and family are found at 14 Lawrence Street:-

Rel: Son
Occ: Scholar
Henry HAMILTON 3 M Dundee, Forfar, Scotland
Rel: Son
Margaret HAMILTON U 42 F Dundee, Forfar, Scotland

Margaret(above) is almost certainly Joseph’s sister. She died in July 1915 at Victoria Hospital, Dundee. She was 76, single, Jute Weaver. Father was Joseph Hamilton, Plasterer (dec’d) and mother Ann ? Hamilton m/s Bishop (dec’d). Informant was William G Hamilton, nephew (see census above).

So Joseph, Euphemia and Margaret are almost certainly siblings.

What about Henry? Joseph Hamilton and Margaret Bishop had a son Henry, born in Edinburgh in June 1827 (the only one of their children to have a birth recorded). He is almost certainly one and the same with Henry Hamilton age 21, born Edinburgh who was buried at The Howff in Dundee in July 1848.He died from typhus fever. Two months previously his mother, Margaret Bishop or Hamilton, age 50, born Edinburgh. Wife of Joseph Hamilton, Plasterer, had also been interred in the Howff after dying from fever.

Joseph Hamilton, Plasterer Journeyman, died in 1873 in Dundee, aged 77. He had been married twice – first to Margaret Bishop and then toBarbara Bell, who was the informant of his death. His parents were James Hamilton. General Labourer (dec’d) and Agnes Hamilton m/s Young (dec’d).

I have found nothing more on JaneHamilton.

From other postings you have made it would appear that you are interested in the Henry Hammil/Hammond/Hamilton who was the son of Peter Hamill and Margaret Adam. In 1851 Henry and his sister Grace were living at Polepark?, Dundee. Family consisted of Margaret Adam, widow, age 49 , Henry Hamilton, son age 19 and Grace Hamilton, daughter age 16 (all born Dundee). Grace appears to have married Alexander Croll in Dec 1865 in Dundee.

Set about looking for your Henry and Grace in 1841 and came up with the following which I believe is them (perhaps Hamill was misheard and mistranscribed)-

Gowden Knowes, Dundee

Marget Adam 40 Angus
Marget Campbell 12 Angus
Henry Campbell 9 Angus
Grace Cambell 6 Angus
Js Fraser 1 Angus
Jean Jackson 40 Not born in county
Christian Raffen 2 Angus
Patron submissions on the igi provide the following info.
Margaret, daughter of Peter Hamill and Margaret Adams was born on 24/2 1829 and died 24/8/1849.

Grace daughter of Peter Hamilton and Margaret Adam married to Alexander Croll was born in Dundee 24th Jan 1835. They emigrated to the US and were in Springville Utah in1880. Magaret A Hamilton, Mother in law, born in Scotland, is listed in the household.

Henry Hamilton son of Peter Hamill or Hamilton was born 1831 Dundee. Died 1901 in Utah. Married to Janet Johnston 1857 and Euphemia Scott 1863 in Utah(polygamous marriage?). .In the 1880 US census at Provo Utah as a Farmer born Scotland with Jeanette (Johnston?) and 8 children, youngest of whom was Isabel Hamilton age 4m(see below). Another 7 children appear to be with Euphemia Hamilton (Scott) in Spanish Fork Utah. Janet was born in 1841 in Coatbridge Lanarkshire in 1841 and died in 1914. Euphemia was born in Oakley Fife in 1847 and died in1892. All three are buried in Spanish Fork, Utah.

Margaret Adam died in Springville Utah in 1882.

Hope this helps.

Isobel

Hamiltons

Isobel,
Thanks so much for all of the research you did for me. I don't understand how you found my great grandfather when his last name was spelled Campbell, but that is him. I remember my aunt has them in her research as living at Gowden Knowes. I am thinking that Margaret Adam Hamilton and family may not be related to the Joseph in the 1841 census. Maybe they just happened to be living in the same place. Margaret's husband Peter Hamil, or Hamilton was born in Antrim Co. Ireland and died in 1836 and was buried at the Howff in Dundee.
Thanks again,
Alice
