Bennies from up the Braes .....

Post by WilmaM » Thu Apr 14, 2005 11:24 pm

I've just dipped my toes into the delights that the 1871 census may hold..

And already have a query . #-o

Looking for Alexander [25] and Grace Bennie [27] in Blackbraes. Found them and their 2 children no problem :) but also with them are 3 other 'Bennies'

Robert aged 16

Peter aged 13

Rebecca aged 11

All are down as 'cousin', in relation to Alex as head presumably.

I looked for their births on the IGI and found Peter and Rebecca with parents as George Bennie and Janet Baird. Robert is more elusive .

Now there lies the problem - George Bennie & Janet Baird are GRACE'S parents, on both her marriage certs [ Alex died of smallpox in 1872] and her death cert in 1920. Her parents are marked as deceased in 1866.

Alex's parents are John Bennie and Rebecca Gillespie [or Marion on the IGI]

So are the 3 really Grace's orphaned siblings AND Alex's cousins, which would mean Grace was his cousin too.

I haven't managed to establish Alex or Grace's grandparents and trying to look for a John & George Bennie with matching parents in Braes area makes my head swim [ that's without even thinking about all the IGI submitted entries  ]

Is there a simple way of working out just who these wains are? ](*,)

Good morning, Wilma!

You didn't mention the ages of Alex and Grace's children. Could it possibly have been one of them who gave the census info and considered the three others as cousins instead of uncles or aunt?

Then again, cousins often married cousins.

Have a good day.
