Advice please

Post by flipside » Wed Oct 25, 2006 1:57 pm

Might be a daft question however

When you have a marrrage certificate, you get the parents for the people being married.

How do you go about findind out if these parents had anymore kids apart from the ones being married?

Hope this make sense

Many thanks

Flip

The easiest way is from the census records which are available on ScotlandsPeople. They have census records for Scotland from 1841 - 1901 and if the people you are looking for are alive during the 1881 census someone may be able to help you do a look-up from the CD.

The census will be able to tell who is in the family, ages (although not always the correct ages), occupation, where they were born and where they are presently staying.

Hi Flipside
It depends when they were married - if it was before about 1870 another way to do it is on the IGI using a parent search. see:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... _form=true
the click on Tips on How to Search the International Genealogical Index
Search for Children of the Same Parents

To search for children of the same parents, enter:

The region.
The father’s first and last name.
The mother’s first name (the mother’s last name is optional).
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Flip,
There are no daft questions..... only daft answers :)

Someone will probably give you a more detailed answer on this but three methods are,

You can do a parent search on the IGI (there is a link under "Sources" at three top of the page),

You can look for the family on the census records to see if they have more children. The census records can be searched at ScotlandsPeople (pay per view site).

Go in person to to NRH in Edinburgh or Park Circus in Glasgow and search through the records.

As altready suggested, up to 1901 the census method is the best way, but just remember that a child can be born and die in between censuses! And FamilySearch is the first port of call if the period involved is up to 1875. (There is also data for 1881 and 1891, but it's then a lottery if there were any births in those years, but then it is free  )

In between 1901 and 1928/1929 can be a bit of a problem. If the surname is less than usual, the family remain in one of a number of neighbouring rural parishes, or the same general area, but outside the cities, or large urban conurbations, then no great problem, but BROWN in Glasgow can be a challenge. One technique always to consider is to look for matches on the basis that the family followed the traditional naming pattern.

After 1929, 1928 in some registration districts, the situation becomes easy,- straightforward at least, - as the indexes from then on also include the mother's maiden name, so all that needs to be done is to look for all male or female births for the surname involved and scan the results to look for matches with the mother's maiden name. It's even possible to find SMITH with a mother with the maiden name BROWN, - it just takes a bit more time! Obviously this can only be done at NRH, Park Circus, or of the other registrars with a link into DIGROS in Edinburgh.

Thanks Everyone

your help has be great

I am lucky i guess then cause the people i am after are kids of Patrick Donnelly and wife Margaret Smith. Also the kids of his father Peter Donnelly and Isabella Campbell.

The all live in Merry's Rows Blantyre along with most of the Donnelly family. Partick died in 1923 and is wife died 1924.

I am obliged to you all for pointing me in the right direction
