David Mackay 1881 where is he? .....

Post by Pauleen » Sat Nov 11, 2006 3:26 am

I've been trying to track DAVID MACKAY down for ages, I'm hoping someone can help. He was born sometime around 1851 in Sutherland (probably Rogart). He left Rogart for (apparently) Glasgow, but ended up in Blantyre where he married MARY GREEN. He died in 1894 in Aberfoyle at the age of around 43 years. His parents were NEIL McKAY and MARION MACDONALD. I have him on the census return of 1891 in Drymen but can't find him in 1881. If you know his date of birth that would also be most helpful. I'd be really pleased to hear from anyone who thinks they may have info on him.

Welcome to TalkingScot Pauleen!

I've had a look at the Old Parish Registers and the IGI for a birth record for David born to Marion MacDonald and Neil McKay. There were 2 David M*Kay registrations - 1 for 1849 and the other for 1851, but neither parents were correct.

Also checked the same sources for a Marriage between Neil Mckay and Marion Macdonald without any luck.

The IGI lists several of their children (transcribed from church records):

ROBERT MAC KAY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 06 MAY 1861 Rogart, Sutherland, Scotland
Death: 02 MAY 1862

HUGH MAC KAY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 20 MAY 1863 Rogart, Sutherland, Scotland

ALEXANDER MACKAY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 13 JUL 1865 Rogart, Sutherland, Scotland

NIEL MACKAY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 31 MAY 1867 Rogart, Sutherland, Scotland

MARY MACKAY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 16 JUN 1869 Rogart, Sutherland, Scotland
* Mary's mother is listed as Marion MACKENZIE

Wonder what happened in the 10 year gap between David & Robert? Is it possible, that David was a younger brother, raised by Neil and Marion?

You'll likely have more answers than just mine, so please check back for additional info and pointers from other members.

Again, Welcome!

    Hi Pauleen,

The births from the IGI that Frances listed above are all extracted from the statotory registers (as they are post-1855), so you should be able to download copies of these birth certificates from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (link button at the top of this page) on a pay per view basis.

As these should all also give the details of the parents' marriage, you should be able to tell if Mary is born to that couple or not.

You should be able to find this family in the 1861 census (and probably 1851 and 1871) in Rogart. These censuses are available at the ScotlandsPeople website.

Hopefully David will be at home with the family on some of these censuses and you should be able to confirm him as being from Rogart, even if he is not entered in the Old Parochial Registers (OPRs). As his birth seems to have been pre-1855, there will be no statutory registration birth certificate for him.

    All the best,

    AndrewP

    Hi Pauline,
I had a look through some records.
Cannot see any David McKay on the 1881 census that comes close to yours.
Unless he was married before Mary Green
There is no marriage record in Blantyre, but it is in Port of Menteith.
However, in 1881 Mary is in Blantyre with her younger brother and Mother.
Neil McKay married Marion McDonald in 1847 and I think Marion and some of the family are still in Rogart in 1881.
I have a few Greens and McKays on file from Blantyre and Airdie.

Hey there Paddyscar, AndrewP and Davie

Thanks for all the info you sent. Some of it I already had but I will most certainly check out the rest of it, especially the younger brother thing - that hadn't occurred to me. I'll post any findings, if you're interested. All the best with your own searches

    best wishes
