Glendinning family - Edinburgh area .....

Post by rscottg » Thu Nov 16, 2006 3:56 pm

Hi everyone,

I just joined the board today because I recently read one Jean Jeanie's past posts regarding Jasper Glendinning. As of yesterday, I happen to recieve information enabled me to go beyond my ggg-grandfather with some certainity. And because of it, I was able to go back to my gggggg-grandfather Ninian.

And from looking at the tree, I see Jasper Glendinning as having the same common grandfather as me - John 1763 (as below on my tree).

Ninian 1697->Alexander 1727->John 1763->Archibald 1791->Jasper 1821 (not sure if that is the correct year?)

My Glendinning Grandfathers:

Ninian 1697
Alexander 1727 in Canongate
John 1763 in Canongate
Alexander 1793 in Kirkliston
Alexander 1832 in Ratho? (died in Edinburg, North Dakota, USA)
James 1872 in Canada (Ontario)

I'm just new when it comes to properly tracing my roots, but someone else gave me the Ninian Glendinning line. Hopefully the information is pretty close to correct.

My line at James 1872, connects through marriage to the extensive James GLENDINNING and Agnes LITTLE tree that is maintained by Ian Glendinning.

Hi Scott

The Glendinning family is one of my main lines.

Jasper born 1821 is my gg grandfather. His father was Archibald b 1791. Archibald's father was John b abt 1760. This John died before 1855 and as far as I am concerned there is no way to trace his parents as there are a few John Glendinnings who could fit the bill.

The line, however, can be traced a bit further back.

Jasper's mother was Isobel Stevenson and she was the daughter of Barbara Glendinning b 1758 and Jasper Stevenson (This is where we get the Jasper from) Barbara's parents were Archibald Glendinning b abt 1730, presumably, no other details of him. Her mother was Christian Ewen.

I have seen this connection to Ninian before on another board. No one, as far as I am aware, has been able to justify the connection.

I would be interested in any info you have on Alexander b 1793, parents John Glendinning and Mary Potter. Someone else has been in touch with me re this Alexander, who we think married Elizabeth Strachen and one of his sons ended up in Battersea London.

If you would like to contact me personally, then please send me a PM through this board and let me have your e mail address.

Hi All,

Wondering if the Glendinning's listed above are related to Elizabeth Glendinning born 1800 Dryhope, daughter of Thomas Glendinning and Mary Weir?

Regards
Donna
Looking for Dickson, Reid, McGill lines in Scotland. Ord and Potter lines in England.

Hi Donna

I've not come across these names in my research. Most of mine are from The Lothians.
