CALLING DAVIE 1891 Census - DUMBARTON ROAD .....

Post by Wendy » Sun Apr 24, 2005 7:02 pm

HI Davie...
You mentioned :
The two records between them have an excellent example of "death certificate promotion". On the register entry for Agnes, she was shown as "widow of William Moreland, Tramway Car Conductor"; while on his death register entry, William was shown as "Tramway Company's Labourer" !

In 1891 two of the kids are living with their married sister Mary J GRAHAM, on Dumbarton Road, a few hundred yards away from where my father was born a few years later
I have the certs but need a hand...

I have searched and have found 6 pages of Grahams...BUT not MARY JANE...in the 1891 census  seems to be all the wrong agaes for a MARY GRAHAM ..was wondering if you still had it??? your help would be great...

Because she's shown as Mary J...... see my original post ........ but even if you search the index for "Mary J" you won't find her, as she's indexed under "Mary I"

Instead, search in 1891 for an 18 year old James MORELAND, - Dumbarton Road is largely in Partick ................

Mary J is 29, and Agnes Moreland is 21 ............

The score marks in the original ED books are either in red or blue pencil, so that the original age entries are quite clear, but the B&W scans are not always so clear.

The solution is to look in the index for the matching record, - in this case in Partick ..... where the age will be shown.

And it's 370 Dumbarton Road .................

Post it in the Gallery here.......... if you don't know how to do that, email it to me at 106200.1510@compuserve.com and I'll place it in the Gallery on your behalf :!: 8)

Often the key to deciphering such records is partly at least knowing what to expect from experience in terms of words and formats and the handwriting styles of the times.
