Hello and Happy New Year Cathy
Not much on Peter I'm afraid but hopefully a bit of help with the births of James and John.
From a poorhouse application made in 1890:
Widow James Quin Helen McKenna
15 Abercrombie Street. Date of Application-11.7.90
Born Renfrew Lane, Barony
Age 24 - Widow - R.C.
Married 5.1.87 at Tobago Street Rev John Murray.
Reason for application - Pregnant.
She earns 2/6 weekly.
Parents James McKenna, labourer and Mary Martin (BD)
Husband was an iron moulder from Saltmarket. Son of John Quin Customhouse Officer (dead) and Jane Logan residing at S. Wellington? 1st close right from Rutherglen Road.
Family:
James illegitimate 5y 3 m born 45 Duke Street. (James was later marked dead)
John 2 born in Motherwell.
She made another application in 1930 and the inspector added this to the family info
Illegt. by paramour Peter McLeod.
Helen b.1897 Moncur St
Cath b. 1903 Greenvale St
Rose b. 1908 E. Rose St
16.1.30 Widow Jas Quin, 52 Canmore Street to E.D.H. Paramour Peter McLeod on panel. She has an army pension of 12/- for grandson.
She was referred to Govan where they filled out another application but the only extra piece of information was on the 10th October 1894 it was stated that she had an illegitimate child named Margaret, 7 months old.
There is another application which I will look at next time I go (I gave an incorrect reference today) but I don't think it will tell us much more as it was, again, made in 1890.
I looked at both 226 Moncur Street and 31 Greenvale Street on the 1901 census but no joy finding Peter or Helen.
I will look again at other addresses given (unless Jack comes up with anything)- I ran out of time today.
Kind regards,
Annette

Hello Karen,karenc wrote:Well done Annette,
looks like you have been very busy today!
I actually wanted to ask about poor relief records. how would i know if someone was likely to have applied for poor relief? is it worth a look anyway if you are looking for more info on someone?
Karen
In this particular case the chances were high because Helen was a widow with young children.
A lot of the applicants die in the poorhouse so again an application will have been made but not all of the books survived.
If you want to give me a couple of names with birth dates and places I will have look next time I'm there.
Regards,
Annette M
