Dalziel and Grangemouth, 1881 and before .....

Post by annpa » Sun May 01, 2005 4:26 pm

I hope someone can help me. I cannot find any entries in the 1881 census (Scotlandpeople and LDS discs) for Dalziel. I know that my family lived there. I am looking for CASEY and CROSSAN.
I presume Dalziel (Motherwell) was enumerated in 1881 but under what area?
Am having the same difficulty with Grangemouth. I have tried using Falkirk but no joy, there are no entries for Grangemouth.

Dalziel is definitely there on the Lowland Scotland CD - Enumeration District number 639.

I found 3 Crossans there: Janet (17) and John (15), step-children in the Bell household; and Charles (35), a boarder in the Johnstone household.

No Caseys in Dalziel.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hi there , you can also see Casey families in Dalserf . 638 district. There are a couple of families but without names it could be any of them. There are Crossans in Falkirk which Grangemouth is a stones throw from.Thomas & Lillias with children John ,Alexander & William. Another family is John & Ann with kids William,Catherine,Jessie,Ann,James,Alexander & John the last 4 kids being born in Grangemouth.

Annpa,

The 1881 census was indexed by Civil Parish.(top left hand corner of census cert.) As Grangemouth was not a Civil Parish but part of 3 parishes, Falkirk, Polmont and Bothkennar, these are the placenames any entries for Grangemouth will appear under. It will appear that no one actually lived in Grangemouth if you enter that by itself in census place search. This is the same for many small places, so the civil parish has to be found.

There are no entries for Crossan under Bothkennar and Polmont, but there are as Billy says under Falkirk

Then using Streetmap uk or similar map site, and the addresses from 1881 Highland discs you should be able to find which ones are actually in Grangemouth and not in any other part of Falkirk Parish.

Edited to suggest you may have to use the neighbour function on disc for neighbouring streets, just to confirm where the entries are.

Thanks to you all for your help. Have yet to find my elusive Crossans and Caseys, but will keep trying. thanks also for the Grangemouth info re Polmont, Bothkennar et al. Will start again.
Edit:. Not sure if the streetmap software will help me in my search. Was in Falkirk at the weekend, using a streetmap, looking for Baxter's Wynd, just off the High Street, only to find that it is buried under a modern shopping mall. Also the streets where my family lived in Bridgeton, Camlachie and Dalmarnock in Glasgow may still be there, but all the houses have been demolished and there are new flats and things there. Found that there is a housing estate on the site of the Barnhill Poorhouse where two of my greatgrandparents died at the beginning of the 20th century. I hadn't come up to Scotland to see all this, but because of problems on the M8 and Kingston Bridge, decided to come in via the old A74, and therefore through all these areas. Also visited the People's Palace which was terrific, and I recommend it to everyone!

Baxter's Wynd is alive and well and where it always was.
Any buildings on one side have been demolished, but the other is still there and the Wheatsheaf Inn is still operating in the original buildings.

Thanks for that, Wilma. didn't have time to go into falkirk itself to see, believed what I saw on the map. Next time.......!
Map purchased, by the way, at the gift shop at the Falkirk Wheel. If you haven't seen it, go this summer. Marvellous piece of technology replacing all the locks.
