Actually it's in relation to the 1921, and 1931 censuses.

The wording is

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to reduce the classified period for census data from 100 years to 70 years.

Just to provide a bit of balance, there's also the following petition as well at http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/censusconfid/

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to maintain the undertaking that census information would not be released for 100 years, and that the FOI Act should be amended.

Submitted by David Franks – Deadline to sign up by: 10 March 2007

Rather than encouraging TS members to sign one or the other petition, I'd suggest that TS members make up their own mind if they're minded to sign either :!:

I understand where your coming from here and to be honest I agree the census should be locked for 100 years but if you/we are trying to get others to join in and raise discussion why make the above statements? seems as though your bored of this and want to move on. If your bored then don't follow, as long as nobody is being rude or offensive then I don't think you should lock any of the threads. If others want to discuss it for 10 or 20 pages then let them, we might not agree but it's all fair comment as far as I can see, as for the 100 year rule for the census, should it not be locked till the last person who could be on it dies? say 115 years!! Only kidding but an old lady died here in Scotland a few weeks ago and she was 107 !!. Why should here details be out in the open?? being picky here but if you are trying to protect peoples dignity by withholding the census information what about that old Gem's.

PS David and Ina and all the admin, you do a great job so please don't take offence at this but alot of us read the threads everyday without logging in and posting for postings sake.

Hello all

You can see I'm a new subscriber and I posted the original message on the census forum (errors and all) for information purposes only as it seemed the most appropriate place. If I'd had the link to the other petition I would probably have posted that as well and indeed appreciated that A N Other (I'm sorry I dont recall the name) did so. It wasnt till after I had sent the first message I was trawling further through the genreal forum and found the previous thread to which Ina refers.

To be honest, while I can see that the previous poster of the information may have taken it a bit personally I must say I'm not that surprised. The reaction to a new subscriber was very unwelcoming. The sarcasm after she/he unsubscribed (?) was completely unecessary. Some you "old hands" maybe need to sit back and consider that it takes a lot for some people to actually contact a public forum with information or to ask for help and such a fierce reaction may well stop that person doing so again. Why not take time to get to know a newbie before jumping down his/her throat

I agree with the person who wrote - if you're not interested in the topic, dont participate.

Sign one or the other or none at all. I have no further interest in this topic, discussion - call it what you will.

I don't want to add fuel to the fire but I think you are wrong in accusing anybody of "jumping" down anybody throat.
I think everybody let their feelings either way be known on the matter & I
think the person concerned took the "hump" where none was intended.
I have found everybody to be very welcoming & helpful. The discussions can be lively & not everybody sings from the same hymn sheet. However
we are all researching & sharing our knowledge of Scottish(mainly!) family history & culture.
I personally have mixed feelings on the Census. As I personally was an Emunerator for the 1980 one I know that confidentiallty was one of the cornerstones of it all.The Government promised 100 years.
I would love to see the 1911 et all & I know that the US 1930 Census is already out there but they decided on a 75 year release & we didn't so I think we have to stick to that.
May I say I know that often people were misleading/lying to me on the info they provided so it has given me some insight when looking at the Censuses- a huge pinch of salt is often required!
