Brick wall - help appreciated

Post by Maxie » Fri Jan 26, 2007 9:20 pm

Hi all, hope someone can help a longtime lurker (apologies!!! ).

I've hit a major brick wall in my search of the Darling family and can't get past it.

Christopher Darling died in 1881 in Greenside, Edinburgh and was married to Catherine Miller in 1842 in Forfar. His parents are stated as David Darling (Cabinet Maker) and Ann Edington, however I believe her madien name is actually Edmond from her death certificate (1871, Duns, Berwickshire). I have found her birth possibly as 1786, Dirleton, Berwickshire.

I have found the birth of Martha Darling - 1808 in Duns- who I think is Christopher's sister. However have been unable to find Christopher's birth or the maariage of his parents, David and Ann.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, this particular sticking point has been giving me grief for some time!!!

Thanks, Maxie. :D

Hi Maxie

have you tried finding them on any census? you can get the 1841 - 1881 on scotlands people. try and find these and find who he was living with or where he was living. you should also get ages and place where born on the census aswell, apart from the 1841.

maybe you have already tried this though!

Hi Karen,

thanks for the advice, I have already found Christopher on the 1851 Census aged 28 in Prestonkirk parish which states his place of birth as Duns, Berwickshire. His mother Ann is living with his family aged 48 born Dirleton, Berwickshire.

I have also found Ann in the 1841 Census in Duns living with her daughter Martha Newton, this time aged 55!!! She appears to have returned to Duns where she died aged 84. There is no sign of David in any census so far, and he is stated as deceased on Ann's death certificate in 1871.

Maxie. :D

Hi Maxie,

I got this from Freecen, I take it this is your family:-

1851 Census
8 Records found

Piece: SCT1851/717 Place: Prestonkirk -East Lothian Enumeration District: 4
Civil Parish: Prestonkirk Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: Prestonkirk
Folio: 0 Page: 2 Schedule: 5
Address: Phantassie

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Surname First name(s) Rel Status Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
DARLING Christopher Head M M 33 Coachman Berwickshire - Dunse
DARLING Catherine Wife M F 29 Perth - Errol
DARLING David Son U M 8 Scholar Midlothian - Crammond
DARLING John Son U M 6 Scholar Stirlingshire - Falkirk
DARLING Margaret Dau U F 4 Stirlingshire - Falkirk
DARLING Anne Dau U F 1 East Lothian - Stenton
DARLING James Son U M 1m East Lothian - Prestonkirk
EDMOND Anne Mother W F 48 East Lothian - Dirleton

As Ann has a W for her marital status it would appear that David died pre 1851.

Freereg has some very good East Lothian records. On there I found this one, I'm not saying he's yours but it's one to bear in mind, given where the family are in 1851:-

County East Lothian
Place Innerwick
Church Innerwick Parish Church Vol V
RegisterNumber 48
BurialDate 02 May 1848
Forename David
Surname DARLING
Age
Abode Westhall
Notes

If he's yours then he should, in theory, appear on the 1841 census somewhere. :!:

Does your 1841 census have a maritial status for Anne?

Best wishes
Donna

p.s. On Genes Reunited there are a few people with Christopher Darling of Duns born circa 1822 listed. Those people also have David Darling of Duns born circa 1779 - 1800 listed.
