1901 Census No Address details...Help!! .....

Post by alimail » Sat Jan 27, 2007 12:45 pm

I am trying to find a Mary Reid, age 9, in the 1901 Census, and the only entry which might match is obviously a hospital or home for sick children, as all the names are of kids with rickets or other associated illnesses. The location is listed as Maryhill, but there is no name of home, hospital or street to give me a clue as to a more exact location.
The Census entry is numbered 1901 622/01064/01004 and I wondered if there was a way of finding out where these children actually lived from this number.
Any advice, as always, gratefully received! :?

Hi Ali
If the census page is from Scotlands People, on the download page, you should also have access to a free "header page" which may give you more information about the institution.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hello Lesley, many thanks for the suggestion - it worked! To be honest, I didn't know what those Header boxes contained - I've never used them before. Mary was at Eastpark Home.
A couple of my family ended up there, and I remember it as a child on my way to school in Maryhill. I'll have to find out if there are any records which I could access on my long-awaited return visit to Glasgow.
Again, thanks.

The one you are looking for is on the second page of the free header. So on the page where you have selected the record,

(1) Click on View Free Header
then
(2) Click for View Page After (Free)

Then you will find the answer - Eastpark House for Infirm Children, 382 Gairbraid Street, Glasgow.

In the section below, that address is also described as being within the following places.
Civil Parish of Glasgow
9th Parish Ward of Glasgow
Ecclesiastical Parish of Barony
Quoad Sacra Parish of Kelvinside
School Board District of Maryhill
Parliamentary Division of Partick, Lanarkshire
Royal Burgh of Glasgow
Municipal Burgh of Glasgow
25th Burgh Ward of Glasgow or Maryhill
Town of Glasgow

All the best,

AndrewP

(a couple of minutes later) I see you beat me to it, while I was making my reply.

Thanks again, Andrew. i'm having a great time reading all the extra info I can now get from Scotlandspeople. Sad, but that's how I'm spending my Saturday! :D
