Back to Ringing necks! .....

Post by Wanda Stevenson » Thu Feb 01, 2007 4:55 am

Ok, here's my problem. I am STUCK and don't know where to go from here! So I need help, (other than getting away with murder) Anyway......... my problem:
On the 1841 census my John Stevenson was listed as being 58 years old, now if I did the math right (and we aren't sure I did) he was boren in 1783. But according to I.G.I. records he was born in 1779. So, I checked under 1783 and found nothing. However found one born in 1779. My problem, there is no mother listed, so I can't find marriage for his parents. I'm not even sure its the right one, there are several John Stevensons mention born in the parish that he was born in (Lanark) If it is the right one he had an older sister and a younger sister (I think). ANyway, I need help because I am now stuck, and don't know where to go from here. Please help.

Hi Wanda,
Don't forget that in the 1841 census the ages were rounded down so he could be up to 5 years older than it says in the census. They were usually rounded to the nearest 5, however, so 58 seems an odd age... But certainly my lot rarely told the exact truth about their age!

I note in your previous posts that people have chimed in with various ideas. Could you summarize which leads turned out to be the right ones so we have a handle on these people?
All the best,
Sarah

Hi Sarah;

The info I got on the 1841 census was from Jack, which was really helpful. also Caroline helped me make sense of the entire mess.
Any ideas on where I go from here?

Ringing necks

I'm back on our family tree, and I have hit a brick wall (my head hurts). Anyway, decided to check out other members of the family to see if I could find anything, and what I found was interesting, and very confusing.

Went to Johns daughter (born 1815) and I found that she was married to a John Thomson (I think) and she had 7 children. John, Robbert, John (2) think John 1 died before 1850, that would explain the second John, James, Janet (Brown), Helen (Stevenson), and Walter (Hamilton).
So, I wondered who this Helen Stevenson was so looked up in I.G.I (Mormans) and found that her parents were William Stevenson and Jean Hay, who also had a son John in 1782 which would fit the 1841 census of him being 58 years old. The only problem, is I can't verify anything cause I can't find death records or birth records, her marriage record is just a church bann, and parents aren't listed. So, any suggestions, I'm lost.
