Hello Everybody,
I am hoping that someone will be able to do an 1841 census lookup for me on the family of James Whitelaw/Whitlaw and Euphemia Jack.
I expect the family to be in Old Monkland, possibly in a place called Cuilhill. I can't find the parents in the 1851 census index for Lanark and they are listed as deceased on son James' 1855 MR.
The children are:
John - born February 23, 1812 at Bothwell, Lanark.
Robert - born April 7, 1816 at Shotts, Lanark.
Isabella - born ca 1817.
Euphemia - born July 4, 1824 at Old Monkland, Lanark.
George Arthur - born December 17, 1826 at Old Monkland, Lanark.
James - born November 20, 1831 at Cuilhill, Old Monkland, Lanark.
Any help would be appreciated
-Bob

Re: Whitelaw Family in Old Monkland
Hi Bob,
Here they are in 1841, and possibly sons Robert & James in 1851.
With all those LDS submissions, someone else has an interest in the family!
John Anderson was probably at the same house.

Jack,
Thanks for the lookups. You are right, this family has a lot of LDS submissions. They have a family tree for James Whitelaw and Euphemia Jack that is quite extensive. It is apparently published on Pedigree Resource CD #59, but I don't yet have a copy. My only problem is I can't relate it to documentary (SP) evidence.
The main problem is that both James and Euphemia are now confirmed alive in the 1841 census, but missing in the 1851 census, and listed as deceased in son James' 1855 MR. That means I have no direct link to their parents through DRs. Also, the fact that there appears to be no OPR marriage record for them doesn't help.
The LDS listed OPR birth record for James the father (21 Feb 1788, Barony) is plausible, but in Barony rather than Coatdyke. Actually, it makes sense that he was not born in Old Monkland because most of the population moved there after industrialization at the beginning of the 19th century, but I see nothing to connect him to Barony. In fact, since his first two children were born in Bothwell and/or Shotts they would seem more likely birthplaces for him.
The LDS listed birth for Euphemia Jack is not too convincing. She is always listed as Euphemia in her children's OPR birth records and SR marriage and death records. But, the LDS entry calls her "Euphemia Elizabeth" and then gives an OPR birth record for Elizabeth Jack (7 Sep 1788, Kirkintilloch). But, I have not run across any SP records with the name "Euphemia Elizabeth".
I was hoping the census might give a clue, but I see nothing obvious. I don't know what to do next. I guess I will try to get a copy of the CD and see if they have any source citations for the the tree they give. I have never used one of these before. Does anyone have any experience or advice with these Pedigree Resource CDs? People seem skeptical of submitted entries, does this also apply to the Pedigree CDs? Does anyone have easy access to this particular CD?

Hi Bob,
Forgot to send this in - looks like Euphemia WHITELAW, but doesn't give you anything new.
The family, as you know, should be in Bathgate on the 1861 census.

Sorry can't help with the Pedigree Resource CDs - i know nothing about them at all.

Jack,
Thanks for the extra census.
I have ordered the Pedigree Resource CDs. Hopefully they will be useful. They should take this line back quite a ways, but I hope they have reasonable source citations. Actually, I think I have at least two other places in my family where there are Pedigree Resource CDs available, so I guess its about time I tried them.
Thanks again for your help.
