census indexes .....

Post by karenc » Tue Feb 20, 2007 9:01 pm

hi everyone

is there indexes for the census at the mitchell?

i am trying to find a patrick gorman married to ann gorman m.s. virtue in the 1881 census. i put his name into SP and there were 4 results. i dont actually know where he will be so im not sure which place to put in. although i think he might be in lanarkshire.

i dont have any credits for SP at the moment and wanted to find out where he was as i am going to the mitchell tomorrow and was going to have a look at the census while i am there.

is there any other way i can find out where he is without putting in more SP credits?

Hi Karen,

There are definitely some indexes for the Census at the Mitchell for the West of Scotland areas that made up Strathclyde region. I was looking for someone in the 1851 Census and the Mitchell's index came up trumps!

Brian
SMITH - Luss/Lanarkshire
BURNSIDE - Londonderry/Lothian
SWEENEY - Donegal/Monklands
GILCHRIST - Lanark/Lothians/Peebles
HUNTER/GWYNNE - Monklands/Fife/Stirling
LOGIE/DUNLOP/YOUNG/THOMSON - Lothian

Hi Karen,

I have looked up the LDS CD of the 1881 Census for Lowland Scotland and there is only one Partick Gorman with wife Annie (no Ann or Anne). They have son Joseph, but I took a peek at his birth certificate and his mother was not Ann Virtue.

An IGI check shows them in Old Monkland in 1869 for the birth of son William. His birth certificate on ScotlandsPeople should give details oif the Patrick and Ann's marriage.

The Mitchell most probably has the 1881 census CDs, or maybe closer to home, they are probably available in the Motherwell Heritage Centre.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Andrew

my patrick and ann were from ireland and they were married there. i know they definately came here with at least 2 sons, john and william.

patrick died in coatbridge in 1900 and ann died in coatbridge in 1899.

patricks parents were john gorman and jane brown
annes parents were thomas virtue and mary ann harper

thanks for looking though. im not sure where they will be :?
