Did SP add something new to the Census Images? .....

Post by Anne H » Tue May 10, 2005 4:27 am

\:D/ I feel as if I’ve just struck gold!

When viewing an 1871 image I accidentally clicked on the “View Header Image” at the bottom of the screen (I thought clicking on that box would only take you to the top of the page) but lo and behold another screen popped up with another page giving a description of the census district. Only the usual data for 1881, but 1891 and 1901 have the description and additional pages and now I have a better idea of the area…I was so excited…it was like finding a new ancestor :D

As I’m writing this it dawned on me that this info might not be new to a lot of you who are experienced and knowledgeable, so forgive me for giving old news, but if there are others out there like myself who might not be very observant at times, this is good news.

Regards,
AnneH

It's a while since the feature was added, possibly even before the startup of TS so that it's never been mentioned on this DG, and therefore a good idea to feature it.

It came about through SP user feedback supported by the User Group, in relation to census entries for institutions, e.g. schools, hospitals, prisons, etc., where it's most often not clear from the census page where and what is involved, so the feature was added of the ability to look for free at the 3 or 4 front pages of an enumeration book, once an image has been looked at.

There's a title page with the RD/ED numbers and name, a detailed description of the area covered by the ED if it's not just an institution, a declaration and a summary of the numbers of households etc., - I'm listing these from memory, so E&OE :!:

So there's the benefit of not just being able to establish the institution, but also, for every ED, to view the detailed description of the ED, - these are longer and more detailed the later the census, - in 1901 there will typically be 10 to 15 lines; but by 1871 this are maybe only 4 or 5 lines.

I hadn't realised the entent to which it wasn't understood that the facility exists! There may well be differences in how the buttons for the facility appear on the different viewers.................

I did know it was there.

I think I tried it once but it was taking credits [ or something] so never risked it again :x

I've just had a quick look through my 'viewed images' on SP and I can't find the buttons at all on 1871, 1891 or 1901.

The only ones at the foot of the page are 'close' or 2 'buy credits '
No matter what jiggery pokery I use on my screen.

Help where should they be :?:

I'm back 8)
tried again via 'previous searches' and one showed up with a 'view header' line. But clicking it just asks me to buy more credits :? .

I do have 2 credits left, but am out of time, but as you can get images from 'previous searches' results, you would think that getting the complete information from a viewed image would be possible at all times too.
evidently not :x

Weel spotted............

I'm using the Active X viewer, and haven't tested this for either of the other two viewing options.

When I do a new search in the 1871, 1891, and 1901 censuses there are 4 buttons at the bottom of the screen, - "Previous (5 credits)", "Close", "Next (5 credits)", and "View Header Image".

These buttons may appear in different parts of the screen with the other viewers .............

But when I look at images via the "Viewed Images" option on my account, there's only "Previous (5 credits)", "Close", and "Next (5 credits), i.e. no "View Header Image". I can't see why that facility shouldn't be offered when coming into the situation via "Viewed Images" !

On the other hand, if I look at "Previous Searches" and access my paid for images via that route, there's the 4 options of "Previous (5 credits)", "Close", "Next (5 credits)", and "View Header Image". :!:

Can't recall if this glitch has previously been reported to SoL/GROS, - it has now !!

Hi Davie and Catriona,

Davie, thanks for your explanations and thanks to the SP User Group for bringing it up in the first place.

You’re welcome, Catriona…now I’m glad I brought it up as I think it’s a great feature!

AnneH
