1871 Census .....
Elizabeth Dixon was a popular name. I'm searching for her death record and need to narrow the search a bit. She lived on North Street Dalry, when her husband Hans Dixon passed on 8 Nov 1866. Sons were; William and Hugh Dixon. A look up would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Marilyn

Hi Marilyn,
I don't have access to the 1871 Ayrshire censuses but finding Elizabeth's death took about 30 seconds.
What you've got to remember is that in Scotland the wife's maiden name is recorded on everything. While there are oodles of Elizabeth Dixons/Dicksons (for search purposes use Di*on) there are far fewer Elizabeth AIRDRIEs around the place.
On a first pass search assume that the wife didn't move far from where the husband had died.
Do a Death search for Elizabeth Airdrie between 1866 and 1910 (she would have been about 100 in 1910) in Ayrshire. There is only one.
Cross reference this against a search for Elizabeth Di*on same years same county, there is only two (one is Elizabeth's grand daughter). However only one of these has the same GROS numbers as Elizabth Airdrie. Your Elizabeth.
If Elizabeth hadn't died in Ayrshire use an All Records search to cross reference the Elizabeth Airdrie deaths against the Di*on ones.

Doing a Google for "Dixon Ayrshire census Kilbirnie" brings up a Rootsweb post giving the following:
"Further FYI working through the film for your John/Marion I noted
at 151 Bank Street another household of Dixon. The head of the household
was Hans Dixon married 45/miner b. Ireland and the wife was Elisabeth 40
along with children Litia 17/Hugh 15/David 13/Hans 11/William 4/Thomas 1.
Hugh and David were noted miners and they were all noted b. Ireland. It
seems likely that there were other children between Hans 11 and William 4."
Adam was either born or baptised on Christmas Day 1853 in Kilbirnie.
I'm positive that other Dixons in the area were related, there were no less than 3 Hans Dixons born in Kilbirnie between 1855 and 1864. There was also an Elizabeth Airdrie Dixon born in 1860 to Hugh and Janet Hamilton.

Andy
Thank you for pointing me in the right direction with my search on Elizabeth Airdrie and her granddaughter, Elizabeth Dixon. I just found E. Airdrie's d. record on sp and now of course I have her parents names of Adam Airdrie and Letitia (can't translate). With this new information I'm now able to continue back to Ireland, but where did they live in Ireland is anyone's guess? Thank you for this early Christmas present.
Regards
Marilyn
P.S. I have one hand on the key board and the other wrapping Christmas presents, so I'll have to research the rest of your suggestions soon. I was also unaware of the maiden name rule, which shall prove to be very helpful with my future searches for the lassies in my family.

Hello Andy
Happy or Sadly to report back to you that I just found Elizabeth Airdrie Dixon granddaughter's death record, which lists her father as Thomas Dixon & Catherind Bone (spelling?). Perhaps Thomas may be a brother of Hugh Dixon? It appears this family did stay in the "garnock valley" area.
Many Kind Regards

Hi Marilyn,
Elizabeth's mother was Leticia McCrae, death as reported by son, Adam (which is how I knew I had the right Elizabeth in the 1881 census).
The Elizabeth Airdrie Dixon who died as an infant was 100% positively a grand daughter. Thomas, age 1 year, appears on the 1851 census I pointed out in my last posting.
Thomas married Catherine Bone in 1874.
Here he is in 1881:

Catherine DIXON M 28 F Dalry, Ayr, Scotland
Rel: Wife

Margaret DIXON 4 F Dalry, Ayr, Scotland

Since there was a Leticia Dickson born to John and Agnes Tyre in 1868 this may be another of your family. John and Agnes married in 1854 so it's possible that he was an elder brother.
The Dixons originally came from County Down in Ireland. How do I know? Well this is another occasion where it benefits from checking other related lines.
Luckily one of Hugh (Heugh) Dixon's children, Hans, was born in 1855, Hugh is 100% the son of Hans (Hanse, Hance) and Elizabeth Airdrie. The birth cert gives Hugh's place of birth as County Down.
Hugh's first wife died and he married a Widow Elizabeth (Grant) Kelly. Here they are in 1881: (the ages are WAY out but it is the correct family)

Hugh died in Paisley in 1914 under the Dickson spelling.
There are loads of related families to investigate in the Kilbirnie area.
Happy hunting

Words cannot express my gratitude for this addtional information on my Dixon family from County Down Ireland. Due to a mix up in first names, I've been unable to locate Hugh Dixon's death record until this evening and he passed 90 years ago tomorrow 22 dec 1914. It appears I shall have plenty of searching on sp ahead of me. Thank you for your assistance.

Re: Elizabeth Dixon 1871
Hi Marilyn,
Just a wee note to say i couldn't see Elizabeth in North St, Dalry - nor anywhere in the town in 1871.
But i may have missed her as my eyes were playing up, and will have another look at the Dalry film sometime in January.
Wish those earlier census indexes were online!
