I was wondering if it's possible to search on Scotland's People for an address on its own, or do you have to have a name? I have just tried it but with no success.
Details that might help you : On the 1891 census a great-aunt of mine is noted as being a servant at the Albert Hotel, 37 Cove Road, Gourock. Her name is Isabella McKay. I was interested in this, as I know the hotel. I wanted to find out a wee bit about its history so I thought I'd search earlier censuses plus the 1901 one. I used the name of the man who is listed as Hotel Keeper in the 1891 census - John Devine - but nothing comes up for 1881 or 1901. Now that could be, of course, because he had moved on. So how do I find out who was running the hotel in other times?

I have a feeling it may not have been built in 1881. Only thing coming up for the address 37 Cove Road is in Inverkip but maybe it came under Inverkip then. At that address there were 4 families living there.
I found this reference with a google, so perhaps if you write to Inverclyde council they will be able to help with the history.
Kind regards,

Thanks Annette. The Albert Hotel must have a new address these days. In the census it's 37 Cove Road. But in the photos in your link, No 37 is a house. And the original hotel is still standing, I've driven past it many times.
Cove Road was divided by the railway coming in the late 1880s so maybe the hotel got a new number then. I'm going over to Inverclyde soon to do some research in their excellent Watt Library and I'll add the Albert Hotel to my list of things to investigate!
