1841 Census Column 4 Where Born .....

Post by maggiehill » Mon Mar 05, 2007 6:33 pm

I have just uploaded the 1841 census for Archibald Finlayson and family at Biggar. The older sons have left home.
Against his daughters Janet, Grizle there is a 1 in column 4 and against my ancestor Margaret there is 1/1 possibly 1/2.

Does this indicate that they could have been born away from Scotland as I cannot find any birth details for the girls.

Hi Maggie,

The instructions to the enumerators can be read at:

http://www.talkingscot.com/censuses/census-1841.htm

They show that the "Where born" column should have one of the following:
Yes = born in the same county as being enumerated in for that census
No = born in Scotland, but outwith the county they were enumerated in for that census
E = England
I = Ireland
F = Foreign

I have never seen numbers in that column.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Maggie,

Now I've had a look at the image you have uploaded, I see that the enumerator has been adding up the males and females born outwith the county. The males have a 1 to the left of the N. The females have a 1 to the right of the N. The 4 is where he has counted up the 4 ones and sub-totalled them. These figures were used for statistics summarised in the pages in the front of each enumeration book.

All the best,

AndrewP

Beat me to it Andrew :lol:

Took me a while to figure it out. My initial thought was that it was a very "abrupt" I for Ireland, but the 1/4 kinda shot that one down in flames.

I've never seen that before either.

Thanks Andrew and Mary,

I should had looked at the census longer and worked it out but I was worried that Margaret had not been born in Scotland.
