1891 & 1901 Scotland Census .....

Post by gillholroyd » Wed Mar 07, 2007 5:26 pm

Hi out there,

Can anyone help me? I am looking for information about James Osborne Craig born 1888 in Barrhead. I have found a census entry for 1891 on the Ancestry.com site but as they appear not to have 1901 Scottish census info availalable yet, I went to the Scotlands People site. There my searches reveal nothing as yet. The strange thing is that when I try to verify the 1891 Census data that I have from Ancestry there is no sign of a James O Craig at all. Can anyone shed any light on this for me?

So appreciate any help given

Thanks
Gill Holroyd

Hi Gill,

1891 - Search for James Craig, age 2 to 3, Glasgow City (don't put in a middle name or initial)

It comes up with 3 matches.

1901 - Search for James Craig, age 12 to 13, Glasgow City (again, don't put in a middle name or initial)

It comes up with 7 matches.

None of them might be yours, mind. But at least there are matches. If you include middle name or initial with either of the above you get nothing. Very few census entries had the middle names, so they aren't in the index.

Hi Gill:

Welcome to TalkingScot!

Only one James Osbor* Craig comes up in the birth records for Barrhead 1888. This could be further confirmed if you add the mother's maiden name.

Only one James Craig comes up in the 1891 census for Barrhead when you enter the age as 2-4 years. This could be further confirmed if you also do a search for the parents.

Hope this helps,

How'd you do that, Frances?

I got zilch with a middle name, even using the wildcard!

ScotlandsPeople in 1891 shows the wain in question as James D CRAIG, with which interpretation I'd find it hard to quarrel unless I knew that it should be "O".

1901, - not in Barrhead, neither is faither Archie, or the wee wain frae 1891, Archie Jnr., ........... but there's plenty of candidates for all in parishes not too far away.

Archibald Craig 1901 census

Post by Jack » Thu Mar 08, 2007 7:22 pm

Hi all,

The GWSFHS has a most useful 1901 All Scotland census index in which *wildcards* can be used anywhere.
The data, supplied by GROS, was made into very flexible index for use in the GWSFHS premises.
You can even search on forename only...! Handy for those unusual surname spellings.
Why couldn't SP have made their indexes that way too?
--
The GWSFHS index has Archibald CRAIG & family on it under this Ref No.

1901 644-13 Ed 39 p 80 (Tradeston)
but it should read:
1901 644-13 Ed 39 p 30 (Tradeston)

Page as 80 looks like a typo along the line somewhere.
--
There are other families on page 30, but none of them show up on SP either, so i can only suppose that the
page has somehow been omitted when put online as it was on the data given by GROS to the GWSFHS.
Here are the brief details.
