Scott's Close Cowgate Edinburgh .....

Post by angel » Thu May 19, 2005 3:41 pm

Hi

Need a lookup for the 1861 census of Edinburgh.

Peter Menzies - Blind Musician - 18
Eliza - Wife - 18
James - son - Born 13 July 1860- Scott's Close Cowgate Edinburgh

In the 1871 census he is a Jute Worker but at the birth of his son which registered he says he is a musician.

Hi Heather

Here's the census entry for the household:

Andrew Connor, Head, Mar, 54, Street Scavenger, Ireland
Mary McEwan Connor, Wife, Mar, 42, Ireland
Jane Connor, Dau, Un, 10, Scholar, Edinburgh
Peter McDermid, Boarder, Un, 21, Tailor, Ireland
Peter Menzies, Boarder, Mar, 23, Musician, Edinburgh, Blind
Elizabeth Dalgleish Menzies, Boarder, Mar, 22, Leith
John Menzies, Boarder, Un, 2, England

Ref: 1861 685-4 Enumberation District 38
Parish: Old Greyfriars
Page: 1
Number of Schedule: 4
Road, Street &c: 2 Scotts Close Cowgate
No. of Rooms with one or more windows: 2

I wonder what a "street scavenger" scavenges!

All the best

Rachel

Hi Rachel

Many thanks for the 1861 census for Peter I now know that he was blind in that year and I now have a new date of birth for him as he was age 28 in 1871. I will have to search for his birth in the years around 1838 to see if I can find him. I think that James must have died before the census was taken as he was born 13 July 1860.

A very :D

Rachel

A 'street scavenger' or 'scaffie' is a term still in use in many parts of Scotland. It is a person who sweeps the streets and keeps them clean.

To young boys, the scaffie was an important and respected person.

To clarify the thread, have moved this post here
Hi

I made a mistake in a previous post as I thought that John Menzies may have died before 1861 as he is not in that census. He is in the 1871 census age 12.

So where was wee John in 1861
