hi
Can anyone help me with the 1891 census for Scotland.
I have been looking on SP for Walter Alexander Niven & his 5yr old daughter Clementina. His wife Elizabeth is in Sth Leith Poorhouse but no sign of him and the child. An older son is living with an uncle in Leith.
Have tried soundex and using N*v*n with no luck.
Clementina's birth was registered in the Canongate in 1886, she married William Doig in Newington about 1907.
Walter would have been about 42 yrs of age in 1891.
Walter is in Edinburgh at Stewart Terrace Gorgie with his 2nd wife and some of her children & grandchildren in 1901. He married Elzabeth Dennett in 1893 after his 1st wife died in 1892.
The child's name is definitely Clementina Stewart Niven, she was named after an aunt.
Kind Regards
Bertha

Bertha,
I didn't have any luck with Clementina on Ancestry, so I started playing around.
This is probably a long shot, but I wondered what nickname she might have used since Clementina's a mouthful. I thought of Minnie, and did find one around the same age living with a Walter on Ancestry. This Walter doesn't quite fit because his spouse is given as Marion, but I thought it was at least worth giving you a look.
They're said to be living at 65 Ann Street, Glasgow, and he's listed (on Ancestry's transcription, at least) as being born in S. Africa.
Walter Niven 42
Marion Niven 40
Mary Campbell 31
Rebecca Niven 18
John Niven 12
Walter Niven Jr 10
Minne Niven 4
Like I said, probably not your Nivens, but that's better left up to you than me.
Kathy

Hi Bertha
I tried playing with the SP search and the only Clementina I could find was a 3 year old Clementina Irvine in Aberfeldy, Perthshire. Unfortunately there was no Walter around.
This one looks like it needs concerted brainpower to solve it

Lesley

What kind of name is that?
I've tried short names for her...

Anyone got any others we could try?

Hey
There's a 4 year old Mary N*v*n in St George's, Edinburgh.
She's a possibility at least.
Maybe she didn't like her given name
I didn't try for Dad as there are too many imponderables (take that as meaning with so many wildcards it could be anybody.
At least St George is in the right area of town.

Hi All
Thanks for your replies and taking the time to attempt to find them.
Lesley I saw that weird one too!
I thought she might be enumerated as Christine(a) but can't find one with a Walter.
Walter Alexander Niven was born in Leith around 1849, he was a boilermaker.
Clementina had a sister Mary Shiels Niven who married a Dallas so going to see she is living with them.
Failing that I can only imagine they had gone to England to visit relatives or been abducted by aliens!
All the best
Bertha

hi
Just thought I'd let you all know, found Clementina in the 1901 with her sister & brother-in-law John & Mary Dallas in Edinburgh.
So went looking for the Dallas's in Edinburgh1891, guess what can't find them either!
According to some info I have on the Dallas's, they had recently lost a new born son. Maybe they had all gone on a wee holiday.
Obviously, Clem didn't like her given name, Mary & John named one of their children Christina Niven Dallas. Clementina Stewart Niven was named after her maternal aunt.
Walter was definitly back in Auld Reekie in 1893 when he married again.
Regards all
