Birthplace - 1871 census return - new eyes needed! .....

Post by LesleyB » Fri May 20, 2005 12:02 am

Christina Laurie age 60 living at 47 Duke Street, (shedule no.50) South Leith, place of birth is given as in "Edinburghshire" - looks like Baugholur?? Bangholuer??

I'd be very grateful to anyone who can make it out as I'm stumped!

Hello Lesley,

there is an area of Edinburgh to the west of Leith, and just north of the Botanic Garden, known as Bangholm.

Regards,

John

Lesley

The entry is "Edinsh Bangholm", i.e. Edinburghshire - what Midlothian was called for a while.

"Bangholm" looks like it was either in North Leith or St Andrews registration district from 1881 census address entries.

Have a look at http://www.streetsofedinburgh.co.uk/Ban ... Avenue.htm

Looks like the enumerator was recording the name of part of somewhere local, - possibly he was familiar with it.

Hello John

Brilliant! - that looks very likely. Thanks very much.

I'd never heard of Bangholm. Do you happen to know what Parish it would have belonged to?

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,

Bangholm can be found on www.streetmap.co.uk and searching for the street Bangholm Avenue.

On looking at the parish maps at http://www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/ea ... _list.html and comparing that to the one on streetmap, the immediate area surrounding Bangholm Avenue is in North Leith. But cross Ferry Road, and you would be in St Cuthberts Parish (probably St Andrews registration district). If no luck in either of these, about half a mile west and you land in Cramond Parish.

Bangholm can be seen on the 1855 map at www.old-maps.co.uk - input the co-ordinates 324956,676119 (including the comma and no spaces), then search.

A look at the 1896 map shows Bangholm House and Bangholm Bower (a house) on the north side of Ferry Road - the North Leith side. Bangholm Nurseries are split, part on each side of Ferry Road (part in Leith, part in Edinburgh). The section on the south side of Ferry Road became the sports fields for George Heriots School. The section to the north was built over with housing (streets: Bangholm Road, Avenue, Place and Park; and Clark Avenue).

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Andrew,
Thank you very much for all the useful and interesting information.

Thank you too, Davie and John. You've all been a great help. I'd puzzled over that one for quite some time.

Best wishes
Lesley
