G'day
Sorry if this kind of question has been previously posted. On Ancestry for at the 1861 Census I found the follwoing info:
Name: Jane Hannan (really Hunnam)
Age: 48
Estimated birth year: abt 1813
Relationship: Head
Gender: Female
Where born: Tranent, Haddington
Registration Number: 722
Registration district: Tranent
Civil parish: Tranent
County: East Lothian
Address: Street Of Village
Occupation: Fish Hawker
What does it mean 'street of village'? Does it literally mean she and her family lived on the streets? Sorry if I am being dense here.
I am also a bit confused because everything refers to Tranent when I know she was born and lived in Cockenzie/Port Seton.
Regards
Maple

Re: Census addresses …..
Hi Maple,
A look at the census page on ScotlandsPeople reveals all - including the parts that Ancestry exclude from their index. ScotlandsPeople have her indexed as Hunnan. From a look at the writing on the page, it could be Hunnan or Hunnam (probably Hunnam), but definitely not Hannan. Within Tranent parish, this is in Cockenzie village, with the address Street of Village. She is there with 5 children (probably 4 of her children, plus one grandchild - it is well scribbled).
Street of village probably means that the house fronted the one street in the village. All the households on that page had that address.
All the best,
AndrewP

Re: Census addresses …..
Hi Maple,
Just over a year ago, I lived in a village which, while there were wee lanes off the main lane, all with houses in, all of us simply had a number and the name of the village as our address.
Our regular postie had no problems, but relief posties used to get really confused
