Missing in the 1901 census .....

Post by meelymunch » Mon May 14, 2007 1:28 pm

Hello all,
I am having trouble locating one of my ancestors in the 1901 census.

Edmund Findlay / born 1881 in Buckie,Rathven, Banff. He was a tailor (journeyman) and also a soldier in the Seaforth (Moray) Volunteers.

I've tried all spelling variations for first name and surname and even tried the England 1901 census to see if he had strayed.

He died in 1902 aged 22 at 3, Newlands Lane , Buckie, Banff at his family home.
The cause of death was malaria.

Is it likely for him to have been out of the country with the Army at census time ?
Would dying of malaria indicate that he had been out of the country or did (or do) people die of malaria in this country ?

Any help would be greatly received.

Cheers, Carole.

I think he would probably have been out of the country conracting malaria like my Grandfather who is off in Africa(fighting the Boers & policing the peace)during the 1901 Census-also contracting malaria but the relapsing type which he suffered from until his death in 1943.
He was also a Reservist so made it to France & Flanders for 1914.
Do you have any medals, records for him?It may be possible to find some at Kew in the National Archives.
