Hi, I'm new to Talking Scot, and fairly new to researching my family tree. I wondered if anyone could help me with a couple of problems I can't seem to solve.
First is my father's family from Strathven. My gt. gt. parents were Jean Longmuir and John Law. I found a marriage date of 30 May 1835 but am not sure if this is them. I can't seem to find births or death records for either of them. Their son, James Law is my gt. grandfather.
Second question is on my mother's side from Calton, Glasgow. My gt. gt. grandparents were Elizabeth Gray and George Hendry. I have no information about them at all, but it would appear from the marriage certificate of their daughter that George was a soldier in the 74th Foot. Their daughter Mary Hendry is my gt. grandmother.
Any assistance would be amazing and much appreciated.

Hi Alien,
Welcome to Talking Scot!
Where have you looked so far…did you try looking for them on ScotlandsPeople...link at top of the page? You probably already know that it’s a pay-for-view site, but the best around for Scottish records.
There are two marriages I see for John Law on IGI:
Couple No 1: John Law and Jean Langmore married 17 May 1810 in Aberdour, Fife
Children: (all born in Aberdour, Fife)
Elizabeth, christened 29 Nov 1818
John, christened 18 June 1813
George, christened 24 March, 1811
Mary, christened 30 December 1821
Robert, christened 1 October 1815
Couple No 2: John Law and Jean Longmuir married 30 May 1835 in Avondale, Lanark
I didn’t find any children for this couple but I’m assuming the marriage date for this couple is in line with your gggrandparents ages.
There are several John Law’s on census records…do you have any more information such as birth dates, occupation, etc. that might help to find your family?
I didn’t come up with anything on IGI for your other gr gr grandparents…do you have a little more information on them that might help, perhaps an idea of dates from their daughter’s MC?
Sorry I can’t be of more help but I’m sure someone will be along soon with more ideas.
Regards,
Anne H

Laws & Hendrys
Hi Anne H,
Thank you for taking the time to reply.
I've been to the records offices in both Glasgow and Edinburgh several times trying to find more information on both families.
Laws from Strathaven - I think couple no 2 which you've found, are my family from Avondale (another name for Strathaven). Their marriage is 30 May 1835. Their son James Law married Margaret Lobb on 28 August 1860. From their marriage certificate he was a weaver age 23 (born 1837) living at 'North Innesland' (this address is difficult to read and may be incorrect). His mother Jean Longmuir is deceased on the certificate.
Hendrys from Glasgow - George Hendry and Elizabeth Hendry m/s Gray - both of them are deceased by 1876 which is the marriage date of their daughter Mary. Mary married John Reekie Orr and at the time her address was 42 Struthers Street Glasgow. She was 22 (born 1854).
Thanks again for your help.

Hi Alien,
Welcome to TalkingScot!
We've got members from all over planet Earth, due not least to the Scottish diaspora, but this is the first outside our solar system.
"Earth", the third planet from our sun, has a sidereal period of revolution about the sun of 365.26 days at a mean distance of approximately 149 million kilometers (92.96 million miles), an axial rotation period of 23 hours 56.07 minutes, an average radius of 6,378 kilometers (3,963 miles), and a mass of approximately 5.974 × 1024 kilograms (1.317 × 1025 pounds).
Our solar system is located in the outer reaches of the "Milky Way" Galaxy.
Our star is about 26,000 light-years from the center of the Milky Way Galaxy, a barred spiral galaxy of a Local Group of galaxies within the Virgo Supercluster which is about 80,000 to 120,000 light-years across (and less than 7,000 light-years thick). We are located on on one of its spiral arms, out towards the edge. It takes the sun (and our solar system) roughly 200-250 million years to orbit once around the Milky Way. In this orbit, we (and the rest of the Solar System) are traveling at a velocity of about 155 miles/sec (250 km/sec).
Getting back to your Scottish connections, there has to be a reasonable chance that there are records at The National Archives at Kew, relating to George HENDRY's service in the 74th of Foot.
There's nothing obvious that pops up on a search of the index at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp , but that doesn't mean that there isn't any info waiting to be found at Kew, - only that there's nothing as yet in the on-line index.
It doesn't cost that much to engage the services of a professional researcher expert in the military records at Kew to have an initial look.

John Law Jean Longmuir
Hi Alien,
I have some connections with your John Law and Jean Longmuir. Their daughter Agnes Law married an Arthur Marchbank - part of my line of Marchbanks. I don't have info on your James, but I do have info that they are the second couple here married in 1835 in Avondale. I have more info on the Marchbanks than the Laws but one of Agnes' daughters name includes her mothers last name Agnes Jane Longmuir Marchbank. Agnes by the way was born in Strathaven.
Marion
Researching: Dunlop, Hume, Hunter, Marchbank, McGilvray (many different spellings) Barton, Sutherland etc etc

Hi Alien,
I had a look on Ancestry for your Law family and there are several families that could be connected. Here is a couple I came up with for 1841 and 1851.
1841 Census: Civil Parish – Avondale, Parish No. 621
Address: Piper Row, East Side, Avondale, Lanarkshire
John Law, 30, born, Lanarkshire, H L Cotton Weaver,
Ana Langmeier, 35, born, Lanarkshire, H L Cotton Weaver,
James Law, 4, born, Lanarkshire
Agnes Law, 2, born, Lanarkshire
John Law, 30, born, Lanarkshire
Agnes Langmeier, 70, born, Lanarkshire, Winder PP,
Agness Maton, 2 months, born, Lanarkshire
Is it possible John remarried Margaret?
1851 Census: Civil Parish – Avondale, Parish No. 621
Address: Piper Row
John Law, head, 40, born, Strathaven, Hands Loom Weaver
Margaret Law, wife, 26, born, Strathaven, Hands Loom Weaver
Jamer Law, son, 13, born, Strathaven, Hands Loom Weaver
Robert Law, son, 3, born, Strathaven
Jean Law, daughter, 9 months, born, Strathaven
Could this be a relative?
1841 Census: Civil Parish – Avondale, Parish No. 621
Address: Strathaven Piper Row,
James Law, head, 24, born, Avondale, Lanark, Cotton H L Weaver,
Janet Law, wife, 23, born, Avondale, Lanark, Cotton H L
Helen Law, daughter, 2, born, Avondale, Lanark,
James Law, son, 5 months, born, Avondale, Lanark,
Mary Law, daughter, 60, born, Avondale, Lanark
James Law, 55, born Avondale, Lanark, wright
1851 Census: Civil Parish – Strathaven, Parish No. 621
Address: Piper Row
James Law, head, 34, born, Strathaven, Lanark, Hand Loom Weaver,
Janet Law, wife, 33, born, Strathaven, Lanark, Prin Winder,
Helen Law, daughter, 12, born, Strathaven, Lanark, Scholar
James Law, son, 10, born, Strathaven, Lanark, Scholar
Mary Law, daughter, 5, born, Strathaven, Lanark
John Law, son, 2, born, Strathaven, Lanark
I was getting myself confused going back and forth, but hopefully I’ve written it down correctly. If I were you, I’d look up Parish 621 and check the original records when you get the chance. There is also another Law family in Avondale – Archibald and Jean Law and their children have similar names….might all be connected in some way.
Must get back to work for now but maybe this is enough information to get you started....and now that I see you have a connection on TS, that might get you somewhere. Good luck in your searches.

Re Law family
Hi Alien,
Could this be the parents of John LAW who married Jean LONGMUIR?
It is only a bit of guess though....
--
JAMES LAW
MARY MORTON
Marriage: 15 OCT 1808 Avondale, Lanark, Scotland
--
And is this James LAW & Mary MORTON in 1841 with a son James? - is he a brother of John?
(there's also an Archibald Law who lives in Strathaven)

Janet LAW, 23, Cotton HLW, b LKS [m/s Cumming?]
Helen LAW, 2, ----------------- b LKS
James LAW, 5 mos, -------- b LKS
--
Perhaps John LAW was a widower by 1841? his wife Jean LONGMUIR having died?
John then re-marrying a Margaret McLAREN sometime around 1847?
The MCs/DCs of their children may confirm this.

pps later, this looks very much like Ann LONGMUIR's marriage (Ann died aged 74 in 1880, Avondale).
No actual proof that she is Jean's sister, but circumstantial evidence is good.

pps later, this looks very much like Ann LONGMUIR's marriage (Ann died aged 74 in 1880, Avondale).
No actual proof that she is Jean's sister, but circumstantial evidence is good.
ie, John LAW with the LONGMUIR family in 1841.

Laws of Avondale
Thanks to everyone for replying and helping me try to sort out the Laws. I'm delighted at the response to my question and appreciate all your efforts. It will take a bit of time to go through all the information you've given, but hopefully I'll be able to add to my research.
Hello to Miss Poohs! Can't believe you live so near me in Dalmuir.
Kind regards,
Alien
