Strange occupation on the 1851 census .....

Post by delmarco » Sun May 27, 2007 10:07 pm

In 1851, Angus McPherson is listed as a Planghman, his wife, children and granchild are listed as planghman's wife, granchild etc. Any idea what this occ is? couldnt find it on this site, and google didnt come up with anything much.

Thanks
Karen

Strange occupation on the 1851 census

Post by Jack » Sun May 27, 2007 10:22 pm

Hi Karen,
It could well be Ploughman.
Would that fit in with Angus's occupation on other censuses?
Maybe as a Farm Servant or similar?
Jack
ps, did you get the census details from Ancestry?

Jack:

wow that was quick, I am searching for Angus further right now, yes, I did get the information from Ancestry. I guess it could be ploughman, seems it would fit in with that area.

I'll let you know what I find.

Hi Karen

This looks like them in 1841 from FREECEN.

Piece: SCT1841/97 Place: Glenelg -Inverness-shire Enumeration District: 5
Civil Parish: Glenelg Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 5 Page: 22
Address: Inverie

Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
MACPHERSON Angus M 30 Ag Lab Inverness-shire
MACPHERSON Chirsty F 30 Inverness-shire
MACPHERSON Chirsty F 15 Inverness-shire
MACPHERSON Mary F 13 Inverness-shire
MACPHERSON Alexander M 10 Inverness-shire
MACPHERSON Margaret F 8 Inverness-shire
MACPHERSON Ann F 6 Inverness-shire
MACPHERSON Flora F 4 Inverness-shire
Page: 5/23 MACPHERSON Ewen M Unknown Male Servant Inverness-shire age shown as 00

Ages are a bit out, but checks out for young Flora and the address Inverie, where they are shown as born in 1851.

Best wishes
Jean

Hello Everyone,

Just joined and love this website. Just started on searching my family
a couple of months ago - have done quite well in such a short time.

A good website for deciphering occupations is:-

http://www.scotsfamily.com/occupations.htm

Good Luck

Cheers
